Two-time Iowa All-American joins 'Cats
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano announced the addition of 2010 NCAA Champion Jay Borschel to the Wildcats coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. A collegiate standout at Iowa, Borschel racked up an overall record of 98-10 at 174 lbs, was a two-time All-American and Iowa’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2010.
“As a former national champion and key member of three NCAA championship teams, Jay knows what it takes to be successful as a wrestler and I have no doubt that will translate into his coaching career,” Pariano said. “We had a notable 2011-12 season but know that Jay can help us reach the next level. He provides our program with the perfect compliment of intelligence and competitiveness, which shows with his numerous wrestling and academic achievements. His ability to teach our sport will greatly impact our program moving forward.”
We are starting up a new feature on Illinois Matmen and calling it Throwback Thursday. We plan to release classic matches from the Matmen archives twice each month. We need help from the Matmen community to keep this going. Contact us if you have matches on VHS, DVD, or digital format that you think should be featured on Throwback Thursday and we will help get them online.
Lockport's Lucas Roth shocked the world at the 2006 Dvorak Invitational by upsetting (at the time) 3-time state champion and the nation's #1 ranked Albert White of St. Rita at 152 pounds.
Roth and White would have their rematch in the IHSA state finals with White winning 8-7 to join the elite group of 4-time state champions.
Roth went on to wrestle at Northern Illinois and White ended up at Oklahoma State.
With the 2012 Curby Cup just around the corner on May 19 at Lyons Township High School, I thought I would make a highlight video from last year's event.
Congratulations to all of the 2012 Illinois Freestyle State Champions!

College decisions are never easy. That’s why it took Lane Tech College Prep’s Max Schneider two weeks before he committed to wrestle for Cal-Poly.
“It was very difficult,” said Schneider, who visited the San Luis Obispo campus in mid-April. “It was a stressful period choosing [between Illinois and Cal-Poly].
“I felt it was the right choice. I got along well with the coaches and the guys on the team. The setting there fit my personality. Having them offer [close to] a full ride helped [Illinois offered 50 percent].
“The views of the mountains there are awesome. We went surfing at the beach [six miles away]; it was a lot of fun.
“I like the feel of the university. My parents felt I’d have more success at Cal-Poly. I saw the kind of bills it cost for my sister [Eva] at Case Western and I didn’t want to add any more debt for my parents.”

Illinois/USA Wrestling believes in the Curby Cup which honors the memory of an outstanding individual, Jacob Curby, a former Team Illinois wrestler and coach.
Due to scheduling conflicts, the Illinois Greco-Roman State Championships and the Curby Cup were scheduled for the same weekend. In our effort to fully support Greco-Roman wrestling and the Curby Cup, we are changing the Greco-Roman State Tournament timetable so there is NO conflict with the Curby Cup. We will end wrestling by 3:30 pm on Saturday. ALL age groups will wrestle both days. As soon as it's been finalized we will post the adjusted timetable at ilusaw.com.
Also, The Curby Cup organizers are allowing all Greco-Roman State Tournament participants FREE admission to this year's event.
In Olympic wrestling, there’s often a changing of the guard. As a beginning teen, Ellis Coleman attended clinics at Oak Park-River Forest High School run by Joe Betterman.
With his 1-0, 2-0 and 0-2, 5-0, 1-0 wins over Betterman Sunday night in Iowa City at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the United States Greco-Roman Olympic Trials at 132 pounds, the 20-year old Coleman now becomes the face of the sport.
It turns out, Oak Park coach Mike Powell was prophetic about Coleman’s future.
“After Ellis won Fargo [at age 15], I told our staff if Ellis goes to London I am buying,” he said. “I think that win cost me $10,000.”
