Steve Montez from St. Thomas More (Champaign) was at 189 and competed on the team as well. This was his second year on the team, last year he was at 215.

We need more Central Illinois wrestlers who are willing to practice and compete in Freestyle and Greco next year. We have plenty of talent, and although the practice facilities are spread out, wrestlers that want to bring up their level of wrestling need to get to these practices then compete at tournaments close to them, whether it's in Chicago, St Louis, Iowa or Indiana.

I have nothing against folkstyle, and I understand a lot of wrestlers stay with it for postseason competition, mostly because it is in their comfort zone, but if they want to get to the top, they have to wrestle with the best, they have to do what the best are doing. The fact is the best are wrestling FS/GR. Look at a lot of these kids that are on the Cadet team. Most of them are solid kids that are in the best of their age group, if not already placing in state.

We are not as lucky as chicago or st louis where they have all the competition in their back yard. We have to travel and work a little harder to get where we want to go. We should be used to traveling. Just suck it up, and find a way.
