Really how is this team picked?
I see names on that list of kids that did not even participate in Greco State or 2nd Chance. Don't give me the they asked the kids and they did not want to participate garbage because I know of a few kids that would have been apart of the team that are pretty good Greco guys but they were not asked.
Good folkstyle or freestyle does not always = Good Greco.

I know in the younger groups you cant bump up an age group..i.e., Novice cant wrestle Schoolboy, schoolboy cant wrestle Cadet...If they do, then they are ineligible for the next season...So are you certain? Or is this not a rule at this level?

He defeated Donte Butler of Missouri (5-3, 6-0), that's not a bad message to send out prior to fargo considering Butler was a runner-up as a junior last year at fargo.

I just got off the phone with the Jaguar and Team IL is beating Missouri 33-21 after Scott Penny's close loss at 189. So Team IL will beat Missouri right out of the gate. What a draw to have those guys so soon and what a win for Team IL!

The first qualification for being on a dual team is participation on the previous year's team, not competing in the state tournament or second chance. Either way, looking at the lineup, most of these guys have either been wrestling greco at the state or national level this year and last. I dont know which wrestlers you are talking about.

I would just like to see the best team possible to represent Illinois.
It's odd that you assume that the best Illinois team isn't represented. I think coach Powell, who has been doing a great job with Illinois' greco over the last few years, would have perspective that encompasses more than just the performances of this off-season. And seeing as he or his staff were at just about every greco event (let alone hosting the state meet) I'd assume that he has a good deal of information to pull from when getting a team together.

I agree 100%. Wasn't it him, and his staff, the same group/coaches that finished 2nd in the nation last year?
It's tough to second guess a team before you know the results

I find it absolutely ridiculous that anyone would imply that Illinois coaches would not bring the absolute best teams they could to a national event. They want to bring THE BEST WRESTLER they can at each weight class. Not everybody's kid can be picked to go.

Okay the original question how is the team picked?
When I see kids on a roster that I can not find anywhere that they have wrestled Greco this season, whether they were on the team or not last year, how does that make them a better choice then kids who have taken the sport serious and have been working on it since the end of High school season. I'm just curious how anyone can say a kid they have not seen wrestle the style in over a year is a better choice then kids who have been?
I have received emails and pmails from others who have the same questions, but they don't want to be scrutinized by all , but I really don't care, I think it's a legitamate question.
The following is not said towardsTheHeadMick, but to everyone who has a problem with my question. See if you can answer the question and not belittle me for daring to ask it.

well first of all the obvious thing to look at would be returning all americans and champions from the previous year. try to get those kids on the team if possible. then look at the greco champs and placers and go down the line. now i know some kids cannot attend these tournaments or choose not too so they get bumped. that is why at some weights you see kids you have never heard of because the team cannot be filled. i know for example a few years back we had a kid on the team who was a fargo champion got hurt the nest summer missed all the tournaments and etc. his first tournament was jr duals in greco but should he be with held from competition being the defending national champion at his weight based on the fact he missed greco state?

The kid who is a overall better wrestler will be the better wrester in folkstyle, freestyle, and greco with proper training at least 90% of the time. If there is a kid someone is questioning, he may not have wrestled too many tournaments, but was given adequete training to be able to compete. The coaches want to bring the kids who give them the best chance of winning for the team. That is their only goal, to win for the team. The coaches are able to select the kids who give them the best chance of winning.

I have a wrestler who won Junior Greco State and was looking forward to being on the Junior National Greco Dual Team. He was toward by one Team IL Coach that they would call him about the team. Then, talking to another Team IL Coach they picked the team before Greco State. He was picked over because there was a person dropping some weight to be at this specific weight for the Jr. Greco Dual Team. Wrestler B was on the team the previous year. So, my guy is sitting at home and not even an extra wrestler for this team. That is all I have to say. Good Luck Team Illinois.

Some very good point HM...
My take is this; Coach Powell has had a MAJOR influence as to where Greco is as a style in Illinois again. His team finished 2nd in the nation last year and appears to be a serious contender thus far in the tournament.
He has earned the right to pick his team anyway he sees fit. You can't argue with success. Same goes for the Junior freestyle team and coaches.

Okay....
The teams are picked by the coaches and its a VERY difficult process. This being my first time, I will tell you that kids have conflicting schedules, financial problems, weight issues, or generally don't want to go so thats one big issue. Scooby's Mom, I hear exactly what you're saying and its a legitamate question, but its all about a couple things besides winning state or second chance.
1. Previous years experience. (The kid might not have wrestled one greco match this summer but was an all-american last year)
2. Can this kid last through 9 matches and not gas/pass out/ or give up
3. Can the kid Match up w/ other states competitors. (Me and Medlin were on the internet scouting and matching up guys like pro football coaches scouting before a draft)
Please don't be discouraged w/ how things went down, but everything happened for a reason and it seems like Illinois Greco has it figured out.

Having had a kid on the dual teams in the past in both Greco and freestyle I can tell you that there are way more factors in the process than winning state. There is no clear cut criteria like if you win state or win second chance or if you have won x amount of matches, etc.
The coaching staff pick the team and they choose who they want. The selection process is their's and their's alone. Now does it help if you are a state champ in freestyle or greco? Of course it does. But it is more like filling line up needs, keeping returning team members on board and getting bonus points. One thing that everyone should know is the team gets national points for the number of returning All Americans on the team. So if you have a good team like Illinois does then AA's are in abundance usually. That takes spots right there. And it is only natural to want returning team members from the previous years. They understand the coaches, the practices, the competition. Back ups can move into starter roles. And as southside coach points out, if you have national tournament success against kids from around the country, even if it is in folkstyle that will definitely get the coaches interested in you.
The key is to make it known to the coaches that you are interested in being on the team the winter prior to the next season. If the coaches see a need for your services either as a starter or a backup then you might get on the team.
The bottom line is the process is kinda political but it also is also a matter of need and talent too. Whatever the coaches are doing it seems to be working. Ask Missouri.

Not only are these kids not from the State Tourn but some are not even representing ILL at Fargo. In addition some of the Jr spots were taken by Cadet wrestlers! They had their chance to wrestle and won thier dual. Why take a spot away from a hardworking Jr kid and give it to a Cadet who never competed at Jr level all year? (Stenburg). So you can say the coaches can pick thier own teams thats fine. But do not cry when Greco losses kids due to frustration over the good ole boy selection process.

Number one folks, you need to let people know that your kid wants to wrestle. There are no guarantees, but they need to know who wants to wrestle. Then, your kid needs to make a name for himself by wrestling and getting noticed. Believe me, the coaches want to put together the best team they can. There is no conspiracy theory. Talk to the coaches. They are approachable.

I don't even know what to say. I logged in last night very excited after a great day of wrestling to try to give a small summary, and instead I find people questioning our coaches and some of the kids. ( as Jaguar said, the coaches are VERY approachable. They won't hear you on this message board) My son has been on the junior greco team for 4 years. Yes, he was brought up as a cadet his freshman year to fill the 98 lb class. How many of you know the interest level 4 years ago? We have kids who have been there 3 years when nobody else would come. The coach knows them, not only their ability, but their work ethic and commitment to the team. We lose some every year. And then we replace, and add. The kids who have been on the team are asked to remain and justifiably so. My son didn't wrestle at Greco state and I don't...no... I won't justify any of this with an explanation as to why. If it makes some of you feel any better, he is 150% committed to this team and his teammates and coaches, as are all the boys. We will continue to have a great time here in Oklahoma and hopefully keep winning duals. I thank you for your support... and I wish you could share in our excitement. :(

A perfect example of this was last year when the Junior coaches brought up B J Futrell from Cadets to juniors for the 98 pound spot. He was better than any junior they could of even thought about putting at the spot. He would of teched every available junior so why not bring him up? It's a dual team and you have to put the best man in the spot even if the best man is a cadet. And what did BJ do last year? He only went undefeated for the junior national champ team as a cadet wrestling up.
Who cares if a kid is hardworking but can't beat out the cadet under him? It is a select team and the coaches do the selection. Not a 'let's get everyone a spot" team because he works hard. Obviously if a cadet is chosen then the junior is not working hard enough. From personal experience I know Coaches Bormet and Reynolds don't have a "ole boy" network. They are trying to win and put the best available wrestler on the mat.
Any kid that quits wrestling Greco because he was not selected for a state all star dual team is a quiter any way and probably would not of done much anyway. Who want's a quiter?
Seeing how they are winning national titles on both levels I can't believe people are even questioning their decisions. Go get your kid some more skills and the coaches will come looking for him instead of you looking for them. Trust me on that.

One more thing. The last 4 years results at Greco Duals under Coach Powell:
2004 - won the consolation bracket
2005 - 4th, I think
2006 - NATIONAL RUNNER - UP
2007 - we have high hopes.
We have done nothing but improve. We may or may not win the whole deal this year, but the improvement is obvious and a tribute to Coach Powell and his decision making.
And thanks Twist.

There was no question as to why your son was on the team, I've followed him since IKWF days, I simply was wondering how the team was picked, my son did not wrestle in the State seriers and actually has never wrestled Grecco before this year, there where a few kids I have questions about and again I would never put those names out here, I also see there are a few cadets on the team, which in my opinion are great wrestlers, but I just did not understand the process in which the team was picked, but now I understand that if you were on the team in the past your on end of story and if the coaches feel you are the best man for the job, you are on the team. My questions have been answered. Sorry I really never paid much attention before and always assumed it was the kids who placed in the state seriers. Thats what I get for ASSuming anything, Sorry:(

From what i am reading and what I understand it does not matter if you were on the team in the past. It only matters who the best guy is at the spot. If there was a kid who was on the team the previous year and he is now at a weight where a better wrestler is at, he will not go. Being on the team only means you were picked that year by the coaches, no more whining.

ok...recap.
We drew Missouri first, just our luck, but we may as well get the best over first. We started out great...98, 105, 112, 119, 125, etc. Not just because he's my son, but Clayton's rather decisive win over Donte was a big team boost. We rolled from there knowing Missouri had some guns up top. At 152 Jonathan's win over Nay was also huge. When we knew we had it wrapped up,the coaches "saved" a few guys for later matches.
From then on, we knew we had to wrestle well, but felt the biggest hump of the day had been overcome.
Today will, as expected, get much tougher. Iowa has brought their guns this year, but they are beatable.
Let me just say that there are several guys on the team that are amazing...BJ, Jimmy, Izzy is the quietest kid I have ever met, Cadet (Stenberg...I call him "cadet"), Jonathan (landed on his head literally 3 times in one match and still pulled it off), Big Joe throws kids around like they aren't even there...all the kids are great.
We are anxiously awaiting 2:30. I will give a better recap later tonight. Now we'll see...

Don't misunderstand Twist, I understand very well the decision to put the best on the team. Someone came on here with a valid point on why their kid was not picked. How would you like it if we put Poeta on the World team based on his work ethic and the fact that the World Team coaches knew him and think he is the best fit? Even though he was beaten both at Univ Nationals and Northern Plains. Don't ever assume to take a stand against the tried and true method of head to head competition. This is what wrestling has above all other sports. if you want to start then you beat the starter.
Every year people complain about low turnout at Greco state. Why go if all you needed to do was know or be known by the coaches?
Why have Sec or Reg lets just pick who we think are the best based on past performance( EX: All IKWF state placers allready qualify for IHSA state based on past performance.). Your choice for example Futrell? Great wrestler asside, who at the Jr level would have made 98 anyway? Name one... Also, " who cares if the kid is hard working but can't beat out the Cadet under him." There was no head to head competiton because the Cadet kids never showed up to wrestle any Jr's. So lets stick to the point if this was basketball(yikes)then pick the best based on performance. Since it's wrestling lets pick the kid who who worked for it.

Its because the qualifier is to be on the National Team to compete at the biggest and best wrestling tournament in the US, at Fargo. You place top 3, you go to Fargo. There is a qualifying process for Fargo, the duals are a different animal.

First of all, this isn't baseball, basketball or any other sport. There is no good ole boys selections. They are PICKING THE BEST KIDS TO WIN. No favortism, just the best kids to win the dual meets. As far as Poeta, again you couldn't be more wrong. First comparing the world team and junior teams are just not able to be done. They are non comparable. That being said, if there was a dual meet format, you bet your *** the world team coaches would select the wrestler who gave them the best chance to win. There is nothing that says when you wrestle greco state, and you win, you will wrestle for Team Illinois. For example in IHSA or NCAA dual meet format, in an important dual meet, the coach will not always wrestle the starter, but the wrestler he feels has the best chance to win/do the best for his team. That is common. 98 is a huge weight class in these duals as cadets are able to be bumped up, any many cadets can make 98. Also many 103lbers who are juniors are able to make 98 for the duals. It is only 1 weigh in. If a cadet is better than a junior then there is absolutely no doubt he show be on the junior dual team. That is why this rule has been put in place by USA Wrestling. You can only do this at the junior level; wrestle up an age division. This is so you can put your absolute best team on the mat for the junior age division. Your IKWF/IHSA state theory is baseless, definitely not comparable, and makes no sense in this conversation. Think about what this team is supposed to accomplish and you will surely realize there is no "good ole boys" system of selection.

All I know about the coaches is that they will do anything to get the best kids on the team. The summer after my senior year, I was asked to be on the freestyle team, and I had not been on the team before. Coach Reynolds allowed for me to stay at his house, along with Tyler Clark, Hammons, and Mario. He did this to make it easier for us to get to practice and to the trip. No favoritism was showed towards anyone at all. I will always respect our national team coaches as they did a great deal of things for me. Especially my senior year, when I went out to Fargo for Greco and Freestyle, each of the coaches treated me with a great deal of respect and would do anything to help me out. I will always owe something to Bryan Medellin. He trained me and coached me every match. He knows his stuff. And all the other coaches were just fun to be around and made us all on the team much better wrestlers...

Three points for you to understand...
1. Freestyle state and Greco state are not a criteria for making the team. In fact the years my son was on the team most of the team was picked well before freestyle and greco state. I mean like in December or January the coaches knew who they wanted on the team. Freestyle and Greco state and for the purpose of qualifying for Fargo, not the dual teams.
2. And there were junior 98 pounders last year(no I won't name them but I know who the choices were) but it was just plain and simple they wanted who they wanted and they got him.
3. This is how they have been doing it for years. Maybe some of you guys just started getting involved in the dual teams but I have been around them for the last 7-8 years and it has always been done this way. The coach picks who he wants and state has nothing to do with it. Bormet, Reynolds and Powell know EVERY elite wrestler in the state. And make no bones about it that is exactley who they are looking for-THE ELITE WRESTLER. A average wrestler with no national experience will get gobbled up at freestyle or greco nationals. But if you want to impress a coach go to a tournament like Las Vegas and place and the coaches will beat on your door to be on the team. Win Illinois state and while that is a great accomplishment it is by no means a guarantee that the coaches will ask you to be on the team. In fact by that time of the summer it is probably to late unless someone gets injuried at state.

Man am I glad I am done with this, my kids are gone. There is no set critera which will always lead to arm chair quarterbacking and call it what you like good old boy or what ever does have some play in this. Sometimes it is warranted coachs know what a kid really weighs ( nobody lies about weight) knows he is going to really show up and things like that. Another thing to note is Illinois could send more than 1 team but they have limited funds, meaning if some one wants to pony up $ mabe more than 1 team could be there. Funds coming from a private source there was talk of that a couple years ago.

I think I counted 8 HS State champs on the Iowa team. Don't forget, they do have 3 classes. Here's the link to check out between updates: http://www.iahsaa.org/07wrresults.html

How about Cadet and Junior Greco National Dual Championships??? Win or loose(which I have already called them winning) this is an amazing feat for our state. It's almost unbelievable when I think about where we were at, as a state, for Greco participation just a few years ago.
I am truly taken back by the success at all the age divisons(Schoolboys-6th,
Cadets-1st. and Juniors-1st?)

I will try to recap a little. I am still so excited I can hardly think. Our lowers wrestled incredible. Max has been a rock and continued that here. BJ is just that, BJ. I think Iowa was expecting a win at one of these if not both. Kent was a trooper and never quit. Andrew Long, Iowa's 119 is a previous Greco National champ and has won Vegas and Filas, I think. He beat Clayton at NP Regionals last year and it's always fun to get a little revenge...just like Jimmy did. He got beat by Matt at NP regionals this year in a close match and won when it counted. Lillishawn had Moore. Moore just knows his stuff. Kyle Williams had one of the best matches of the night. Dalton has been an Iowa Greco Team member for years and has gone undefeated at the duals in previous years...nice kid...Kyle dominated him. Danny Monaco had what some consider an upset against Moen. Danny wrestled with more heart than anybody. St. John was a horse. Dominguez is a national champ and I thought Arben was going to avoid the fall until Dominguez had one of the more impressive 5's I've seen. Drendl pinned Kellogg...period. Johnathon can capitalize on the smallest mistake. It's amazing. Grant Gambell at 171 has signed, I believe, with Iowa...another horse. Scott Penny had an awesome throw for a fall...Scott was pumped and he is a big boy. Big Joe ran out of gas, but he fought till the end...and we forfeited 285. It's been a great day and we are hoping for an even greater tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for us. We'll take any help we can get.

Mac, It was close until Jonathan tried to force a throw that was not there. He gave up two and was gutted twice before he could recover. Done deal. A bitter pill for him, but Fargo is where it all counts on the individual level. Nothing can take away from the team victory. Our guys stepped up BIG TIME! We were never behind the entire tournament! NOT ONCE! Max and BJ got us on a roll in every dual meet, and we never looked back. By the time we got up into our middle weights in EVERY dual meet, it was practically over.
I can not say enough about Coach Powell and Coach Holland. Two of the best of the best - class people all the way. They kept our guys loose, but focused to the end. I think this has to be the best bunch of kids I have ever been around. They all got along, had fun and kicked butt!
Clayton Rush was a rock, beating two Fargo finalists and the best wrestler in his weight class in the country, ASICS All-American 1st team section, Zach Sanders. It was priceless to see the looks on the faces of Dante Butler, Andrew Long and Zach Sanders as Clayton just rolled throw the competition. I will never forget hearing the Iowa parents say after Max and BJ tallied up two 4 point techs, "Now we are going to roll!" Clayton ended their roll in decisive fashion! Then Jimmy Chase followed with a gigantic win over McDonough. I did not here a peep out of an Iowa parent after that. They were as silent as we were loud, whooping it up with each victory.
Kent Williams stepped up big time in the Minnesota dual. With a bad back, he not only mustered up the courage, without complaint, to step to the center of the mat, he took it all the way with a HUGE first period pin over Ness. That one match probably did more to take the wind out of Minnesota's sails than any match.

Coach Powell and Coach Holland did an outstanding job of getting the guys ready each match, shuffling the lineup to get the best match ups and doing their homework to know the right moves. I witnessed the coaches at work, after a long thursday of wrestling, being in the computer room at the hotel after 11pm going over the opponents lineups and results of prior matches. The coaches worked hard building a team not just individuals. I can't say thank you enough for the outstanding job both coaches turned in.
This is without question the best bunch of wrestlers a coach or parent could want. The kids got along, supported each other and wrestled their butts off. While you could single out individual performances, every wrestler on the team played a role throughout the duals. Not bad for a team three years ago that was in the consolation bracket. All I can say is congratulations to the team and coaches!!!!!
