I see that Sal Palantonio of ESPN has come out with a book of the NFL's most overrated and underrated. He has the 1985 Bears listed as the most overrated superbowl team of all-time. Some of his other ESPN colleagues said they were more impressed with some of the 60's Packers teams and 70's Steelers teams than the 85 Bears. Any thoughts on Sal's statement in regards to the 85 Bears?

I would need to hear Sal's rationale before rushing to judgment.

Sal is an idiot. He gets less and less air time on ESPN for a reason.
46 defense changed defensive schemes. C'mon 46-10 in the superbowl, that is a BLOWOUT!

That team was not overrated, they were among the best of the best. As to who was the best, that is a difficult, and probably unnecesary question. It would be like picking between Mena, Gilbert, or the Williams.
Now if you want to talk about Ditka, as an overrated coach, then you may have something.

I say bring it on, because the stats don't lie. I'm not saying he was like Wanstat, but very overrated as far as elite coaches.

Da Coach was 106-62 as coach of the Bears, that's hard to overrate.

It was very dominating, but it only took Bil Walsh one year to figure out how to beat it, and he did convincinly.

Anybody can win when you have Rice, Montana, Craig, Lott, etc but after the Bears won the first thing they did was start getting rid of players. The McCaskey's are just about the worst owners on this planet. Ditka and the Bears won in spite of them. Do you know how many times they have been in line for a first round pick and traded DOWN. Any idea why big guy. Cuz they are cheap and don't care about winning.

You're not even close. I've been a bear fan my whole life. I remember watching Payton go for the rushing record in the 1977, and them losing to the Eagles in '79 before Ditka. Your same logic about the quality of players can be made about the 85 bears. They had nine probowlers, and the only person they lost for the next year was Wilber Marshal.
This is the post superbowl record.
1991
NFC Wildcard Game: lost 13 - 17 vs. Dallas Cowboys (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/dal1991.htm)

How many super bowl or nfc chanpionship games are in there? Not enought compare to the Bills, Patriots, Steelers, Eagles, Cowboys, 49's, etc.
As far as trading down, that has been the gm's way of drafting. He likes to get more lower round quality players like Hester or Anderson, then banking on high first rounders like say Benson, Mcknown, or salam.

The Bears have been notorious for trading down, and it not panning out. Then when they do pick high, they go against logic. Spellman, Conway, Enis, Salaam, Haynes, McNown, Terrell, Grossman, it goes on and on.
Only recently have they stepped up and started drafting serious talent. A lot of which i believe is Lovie Smith's influence more than Angelo's "Genius".

Cubs 84, I expected a better comeback out of you. Don't kill the messanger because you don't like the message. Who I am or what team I like has nothing to do with the argument. You seem to be a cub fan, does that you aren't entitiled to you have an opinion on any other baseball team?
The facts are that Ditka was far more interested in being Ditka and all the endorsements that went along with in then keeping the team in top shape. They never even played in another nfc championship until 1898, and they got destroyed bythe 49's in "Bear weather" if you remember.
Where was his great coaching? Give me an example please, something. He had quarterback contreversy every year after '85. Do you remember him defacing Harbaugh on Monday night against the Vikings? Terrible coaching. It lead to Harbaughs leaving. He then lead the Colts to an Afc championship game, and missed the superbowl by inches if I remember.
I would consider great coaches to be Belichick, Cowher, Walsh, Reid, and Levy. They won concistantly, and with the exception of Walsh they did it with players moving in and out of the organization all the time.

Not sure what your point is about Payton, I said 1977 in my post.
The Bears won lots of champioships under Halas before the superbowl.
Reids regular season and post season records are better than Ditkas.
Andy Reid
Head Coach (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/index.htm)
Career regular season record: 81 - 51 - 0 (0.614)
Career postseason record: 8 - 6
Funny how you call Bear weather media hype. Ditka talks about it all the time on the radio.
How many titles did Andy Reid win?

I said nothing about the organization, I was talking about the coach. Tell me why if he was so great he didn't even come close to another super bowl.

Ditka talks about it all the time on the radio.
we are talking superbowl. And I brought up the organization because nobody has ever won a super bowl under the blueblood McCaskeys who inhereted the team and don't care about winning. Ditka won in spite of those idiots. Keep mentioning guys that never won anything thats pretty smart of you

I think you have to judge a team by the whole organization. Ditka is the only Chicago head coach to win the superbowl. Dont giev me the bear weather crap, its just media hype. Ps Payton was a rookie in 76 I believe. How many superbowls did they win before Ditka got there? Say hat you want but he won. he never had a better quarterback than McMahon who couldnt stay healthy. Wait did you say REID? WTF has she ever won?
Its also funny how when Harbaugh goes to the title game its a huge accomplishment, but Ditka took them there three times in 5 years and your bashing him.
That is true, but with a team of nine probowlers, and at least three hall of famers, they should have done better. The other two years they lost 0-23 and 3-28. Many other organizations stayed better for a longer period of time.
I'm not bashing the Bears or there accomplishments, I want to why you think he is such a great coach. What has he done that other coaches haven't done?
Heck Mike Shannonhan has the same winning percentage, and two super bowl rings.
Barry Switzer has a better record and the same number of rings, was he a great coach?

Get this straight, I am a Bear fan, and always have been. this is about coaching ability. I never said anything bad about any of the players. Why are you arguing this way?

only the Best bears coach. In case you cant tell I hate the McCaskeys. The niners had better players then the Bears. I mean they send out Montana and the Bears have Steve Fuller and Mike Tomczak. Who did the Bears have better than Jerry Rice? Dwight Clark? hey I wish they would have won more too but the next year they had no Wilber Marshall, McMahon never played and the offense was payton rt payton left payton up the gut. McMahon hardly played at all in the next couple of years. I guess my point is they havent had a good quarterback in my or your lifetime. Maybe if your dad brought in the veer they would have won more.

You seemed to have settled down. If the question was about if he was the Bears best coach, that's not much competition. The Bears did have Flutie and Harbagh, and both of them threw formany many yards after the left. Are they Montanaish, uh no, but they were as good as Grossman, Dilfer, or Brad Johnson.

but I just understand a little better what you are trying to say. All I'm trying to say is if the Falcons dont get rid of Favre is June Jones suddenly an elite NFL coach? Did I mention I hate the MCCaskeys?

When it comes to players and coaches Chicago has always been weird. Especially recently. For inatsnce Baker, he toook the Cobs to the NLCS in his first year with a great team, then we alll know what heppend. With Hendry not making any really good moves, Baker got fired. Ok this year, the Cubs had a great team, and a great manager, swept in the NLDS. The Bulls their only championships in recent history was with M.J. Good coaching and great players hsan't gotten them that far without M.J. Also how the heck did the White Sox win the W.S. in 05, I do not think they were the team that season. I do not know how you have to measure teams or coaches in Chicago, but I do not think championships is the best way.
