Please respond to this thread if your club is interesting in participating in a Midget (8-10 yr) State Dual Tournament. Last year 8 teams participated in the dual tournament hosted by the Harlem club in Rockford.
The proposed date is Saturday February 12 in Champaign. This is the day before the Spartan Rumble (Midget State Qualifier) in Danville, which would allow the out of area teams to travel to Champaign for both the dual and individual tournaments.
Before spending time finalizing location and time, I would like to know who might be interested. With at least 8 teams the wrestlers would get at least 3 matches and we can justify holding the tournament. The teams would include ~ 16 weight classes starting at ~52 lbs.

We were hoping that someone was going to host them this year. Which day were going to set them? I have to worry about big kid dual teams also. Thanks for the contribution and information. Feel free to contact me at ryanthekings@aol.com

Thanks.

My club the Orland Park Pioneers would possibly be interested. We would need more information about wieght classes, venue, weigh-ins, etc. and then I would have to run it by our head coach. But we are interested.

Based on last year with minor changes at the top and bottom, the weight classes will likely be:
52 55 58 62 66 70 74 79 84 89 95 101 108 122 & 135-145

Can you add 48lbs. and 50lbs.? Any possible way?
Coach Ryan

Midget dual weights: 52 55 58 62 66 70 74 79 84 89 95 101 108 122 & 135-145
I would suggest NOT adding 48# and 50#, they are not even midget state weights. If anything 49#, but that is usually a fairly small bracket that I really wouldn't desire. I would be more inclined to see another heavy weight. You are planning on the biggest weight class being 135-145, but at midget state, there was a 130, 138, 150, and 165. I sugget adding a 150-165. Little guys can bump up 3 lbs, but heavyweights can't cut 20 lbs. Just a suggestion, we plan on coming either way. Make sure to save room for Granite City, we will definitely attend the duals and the spartan rumble if you get it together. Thanks for everything.

How about 61 and 64 weights instead 62 and jumping from 58...i think there are plenty of kids in lower weights?
Hornbaker
01-12-2005, 04:15 PM
Regarding the weight classes, they are pretty well set from 52 on up to 122 but we might tweak the top two depending on interest. Last year there were practically no matches at 49, but there were some kids who would have wrestling above 122. I think its important to keep the total number of weight classes at ~15 like last year so team success is based on the overall quality of the team and not just dominated by the larger clubs.
Midget state is not a true weight class tournament; the weights appear to be set to encourage more participation. The weights for this dual are aligned with those for IKWF state and the difference in weight classes represents more of an even percentage change.
We are currently working on finalizing a location and hope to have more details by the middle of next week.

OF Warriors were at last year's and it was a great experience for the kids. We would definately be interested.

01-12-2005, 11:13 PM
When rosters are turned in, maybe have the option of having either 49lbs. or 150lbs. or 165lbs++++. Choose "1" weight only per Club for entire EVENT... Remember All Clubs and " KIDS" come in different sizes. This is only a suggestion if we are all on the same page for adding any weights. Thank You All.
Coach Ryan

I say just keep the weights as they are, you have obviously put alot of thought into this and your efforts are appreciated. We will be there at both Midget duals and the Spartan Rumble. Let us know as soon as the event is set and we will book rooms. After your posts about covering most teams possible line ups, I completely agree with you. Keep it as first stated and it will be fair. I apologize... If the Midget Duals are going to be held on the 12th of February.. TP Bulldogs will have to bow out. Same day as IHSA Sectionals. Am very interested in participating in an event like this one, and most likely can get a site to host this in the Chicago area... Let me know...

The GC Jr Wariors and Thundercats would both like to attend, but if moved up to Chicago it would make the trip extremely difficult for the only 2 southern teams. I believe both teams are planning on attending the midget duals and spartan rumble. If the location changes, that far of a distance north, I doubt we would attend. Please keep us upated and we will do everything possible to compete. Thanks, Coach Ryan

It looks like we have a location on the University of Illinois campus close to Huff Hall for the Midget Duals which will allow us to run 4-6 mats. I need to finalize some details this evening or in the morning, but expect that we’ll run the dual tournament from 8:00 a.m. to ~3:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, with weigh-ins on Friday night. We should be able to get the kids passes to the University of Illinois vs. Penn St. wrestling meet on Friday night and I’m also working with St. Joe. to arrange for satellite weigh-ins for the Spartan Rumble (Sunday at Danville) for any kids coming down for both. This will save you the extra drive if staying in Champaign/Urbana hotels. We’re also working on blocking hotel rooms. I still don’t have the numbers for the cost of the facility, but the team entry fee will likely be ~$250 with 15 weight classes (52 55 58 62 66 70 74 79 84 89 95 101 108 122 & 138-156). These are the same weight classes the Spartan Rumble will be using for the Junior/Midget division.
If all goes as planned, I’ll post the details tomorrow or Friday and then hope to get email addresses and phone numbers from coaches for further communications.

Rob, Thanks in advance for putting this together, it looks like there are many interested clubs. The Illinois match would be like iceing on the cake. It would be nice if everyone came in their orange and blue attire so we could show our ex IKWF wrestlers who now wrestle for the Illini our overwhelming support. :)

The Midget Duals in Champaign/Urbana on February 12, 2005 is a go! We have two sites available on campus and once we obtain the written agreement I’ll decide which site next week. Either has space for running 6 mats for the duals which will allow us to handle 16 teams.
The basic schedule will be:
Weigh-ins 5-7 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. on Friday
Wrestling 8 a.m. to ~ 3 p.m. Saturday
Any wrestlers participating in both the Midget Dual and the Spartan Rumble will be able to weigh-in for the Spartan tournament at the Midget Dual site.
Each team will be guaranteed at least 3 matches and most will wrestle 4-6.
The following teams have indicated interest in participating:
1) Harlem Cougers
2) GC Jr Warriors
3) Little Celtics
4) Lockport Jr Porters
5) Martinez Wrestling Club
6) OF Warriors
7) Orland Park Pioneers
8) Plainfield Wrestling Club
9) SIU Thundercats
10) Tinley Park Bulldogs
11) Vittum Cats
12) Villa Lombard
13) Fairmont Rough Riders
14) Warrensburg Wrestling Club
15) Oak Forest Warriors
16) Champaign Kids Club
I’ll be putting together more specific details to send to all the coaches. What I’d like now is for each coach (or contact) to confirm your participation with me thru the private message option. Please include contact information, email, phone #s, etc. Next week I’ll send information to each of the coaches including: bracketing/seeding procedures, weigh-in specifics, final weight classes, blocked hotel accommodations, entry fee deadlines, and maps.
Thanks,
Rob

Are the duals still on if you get less than 12 teams (1 Drop out?). Have the majority of the teams in Illinois been notified about midget duals? If not lets keep this rolling, I'll call 2 sections,(west chicago-south chicago), somebody else (coach) volunteer to call another section, and so on. Just in case teams don't get to the computer as much as others. Please post if teams drop-out and I will call immediately. Thank You!

Illinois Midget Team Dual Invitational
Saturday, February 12, 2005
Update 2-03-05
Location: University of Illinois Armory, 505 East Gregory & Armory Drive, Champaign, Illinois
Entry Fee: $250 to “Champaign Youth Wrestling – Midget Duals”
Friday 2/11/05
Weigh-ins: 5-7 p.m. and 9-10 p.m.
Parking will be in lot E12 south of the Armory.
Enter the Armory thru the southwest doors; signs will be posted for weigh-ins.
Wrestlers checking in by 7 p.m. (or call if you will be late) will receive a pass to the University of Illinois vs. Penn. State meet (7 p.m. Friday 2/11) directly south of the Armory in Huff Gym. We will stop the weigh-ins at ~6:50 p.m. and then restart immediately after the UofI/Penn. State meet (~9 p.m.) For those attending the Spartan Rumble on Sunday, the approval to have satellite weigh-ins was withdrawn, but we will finish before their Saturday weigh-ins and will keep a set of digital scales available to check weight so individuals can decide whether to go over Saturday night or wait until Sunday to weigh-in for the Rumble.
Weight Classes:
52 55 58 62 66 70 74 79 84 89 95 101 108 122 & 156
maximum of 18 wrestlers per team (15 + 3 alternates)
Please email a roster ASAP listing, from 52 up to 156 lbs, the kids you intend to weigh-in (18 max). I realize there may be some changes at weigh-ins, but then we can have team sheets typed up and ready to confirm the weights or make any last minute changes. We will be asking the teams to weigh-in as a team starting with 52 lbs and ending with 156. If anyone doesn’t make weight than can try again during the 9-10 p.m. sessions or move up in weight class. The kids will only be allowed to wrestle up one weight class above where the weigh-in (e.g. if weighing in at 69.5, you can wrestle 70 or 74 only).
Seeding: As indicated earlier we will group the 12-16 teams into groups of four (1-4, 5-8, 9-12, etc.) based on number of weight classes filled, previous placing, and perceived strength of the teams. We will then randomly draw the seed from those groups, but will try to separate teams from the same region. For example if two teams from the south (S1 & S2) are in the 1-4 block and S1 draws the #3 seed, we’ll exclude team S2 from consideration for the #2 seed and draw from 1 or 4. If S1 is in the 1-4 block and S2 in the 5-8 and S1 draws the 4 seed we will then draw S2’s seed from 6 or 7, so they are on opposite sides of the bracket. Realize the intent is to be fair, it won’t be perfect, and I’d like to know which teams you regularly face in your area so that we can do the best job possible of spreading the teams out to face new competition in the first round or two.
Concessions: There will be no concessions sold at the event. You may bring your own ice chests with drinks and snacks, and there are several nearby sandwich restaurants (Subway, etc.), some will deliver, and we will have information on site. All food items and drinks MUST remain in the wooden bleachers on the north side and we will need all coaches or parents to help police the area and keep it clean. The University of Illinois recently put down a new floor surface for the track and will not allow food or drink items on the new surface.
Table Help: We are asking that each club find two volunteer parents or coaches to help record scores during the matches (I had several coaches ask how they could help). We will have tables for each mat with 3 chairs for a timer (our personnel) and two scorers (one to record on the bout sheet, one to check the scores and run the flip chart. If each team designates two individuals, then each individual only has to work half the matches (2 or 3 at most).
Awards: Plaques and individual medals have been purchased for the top 8 teams. Each of the placing teams (top 8) will receive a unique team plaque and individual medals for each of the 18 wrestlers.
Saturday 2/12/05
Armory doors open at 7 a.m.
Coaches Meeting: 7:30 – 8:00 a.m.
We will review the rules with the head referee, go over the brackets and seedings, handout or post individual team roster sheets and brackets, and discuss procedures and the schedule for the day.
Wrestling: 6 mats 8:00 a.m. to ~3:00 or 4:00 p.m.
The plan is to insure that all wrestlers get a full 45-60 minute rest between matches. With 12-16 teams, 2-4 teams will be sitting out each round. As soon as a mat is clear, we plan to pair-up the next teams and start the match (as long as we meet the 45-60 minute rest) to insure that we can finish as early as possible.
Insurance:
The Midget Duals is a USA sanctioned event and will be covered by the USA wrestling insurance policy. However, we are asking that all wrestlers and their parent sign the standard waiver form below. Please print a copy and bring the signed form with you to weigh-ins.
