Why was the boot to the back of Luke Smiths head at the end of The 112 lb MSL chamionship not a flagrant he clearly kicked smith in the back of the head after his lose.
For those who dont know: Smith was beating skully like -50 and skully was making a comeback and was losing 8-6 with like 5 seconds and the buzzer rang and luke had a low single and skully clearly kicked him in the back of the head and walked to the center of the mat slapped his hand and ran off.
What are the exact differences between a basic unsportsmanship call and a flagrant?

If it is a kick to the head, yes that would be flagrant. Anytime its intent to hurt, flagrant. I am wondering what happened after yesterday DVC match when the wrestler pushed him from behind with two hands in the small of the back. That is also a flagrant call. Some wrestlers could be missing regionals. Are these infractions reviewed by the school, the conference, or the IHSA? Also, who does the official reporting of the infractions?

Hopefully his coaches do something about this type of behavior.

The official is responsible for reporting an any conduct based ejection to the state.

So it has to be an ejection for it to be reported? What about post-match activity? I've seen some guys lose their minds after a tough match.

I just hope everything clears up before regionals. I would hate to see someone not wrestle because of their behavior.

After that act of cowerdess Skully was allowed to receive his second place medal. One team point was deducted which didn't change anything. So he just got away with it. Good thing Luke was a man about it no retaliation of any kind. Guess it takes a freshman to show Skully how to be a true winner.

Kicking by rule is flagrant misconduct.
Not being there and seeing as it was called USC by a contestant after the match (based on other posts), the official must not have deemed it a "kick".

And as an official we know that the way a parent / fan / coach / athlete vs the way the official sees something often differs...and i won't even go into rule interps..huh...55663

Anything that occurs during the match is controlled & disciplined by the referees. Anything that happens away from the mat is controlled by the same people that control the fans, .. . . that would be the site administrator / on-site security and, for worst-case scenarios, . . the poilice.

Alright, first off I want to apologize for my actions, I am not a bad kid just when you step on the mat all bets are off. I clearly know that what i did was wrong and I should not have done it. I am not going to try and defend myself in anyway because what I did was unacceptable. I have written a letter of apology to the Wheeling High School coaching staff and I hope that luke gets to read the letter too. Frustration took over and I reacted without thinking. I just want to make it clear that I did not step on the back of his head it was his lower back. Not that this is more acceptable but just to clear up. And I know that I have lost a lot of supporters in the wrestling world along with referees and all I can do is say sorry again.

Good for you! You don't owe anyone on here an apology, but that is big that you wrote the letter. If you are a good kid, just continue to be that way and people will figure you out and forgive.

Nicely Done. I don't know alot but I do know one thing for sure. It takes a lot of inner strength to own up to one's mistakes. If you apply the same kind of resolve and mental toughness to your academics and athletics you will do just fine. Your comments not only represent you in a favorable light, they represent your family and your school favorably also. Once again, nicely done.

Patrick... there isn't a person on this board that hasn't done something dumb at some point in their life and for the few of them that will choose to throw stones at you, ignore them. Remember that great character and integrity are not born out of accomplishment, but humility. Publicly apologizing in this way took a lot of courage. Well done...
Now if only you had wrestled a full 6 minutes the way you did in that last 30 seconds...we wouldn't be having this conversation...would we? Don't make this mistake next week.

Tom, I don't know if you've lost any supporters because of your actions on the mat, but I think that you may have gained a few because of your apology. Good Luck at Regionals!

I was in the stands about 4 rows up. Patrick stepped on Smith's back going back to the center to shake hands. He was wrong, he admitted it. I saw his coach/father immediately talk to him. A team point was taken away.
What bothers me was the number of people talking about the entire Hoffman Estates team as cheapshot artists and poor sports. Granted this group of kids wrestles hard and they have an edge about their approach. For one, who has a kid at another MSL school, I appreciate that competitive edge.
With all due respect Patrick, you have lost your cool on more than one occassion (remember last year frosh/soph state when you slammed the door, albeit after the match and injured yourself). Hopefully these learning experiences will teach you that your are hurting no-one but yourself.
You are a very talented wrestler which an tremendous opportunity for success. Don't let your temper diminish your chance for success.

Well I know that Fremd wrestlers were getting a little chippy with cheap shots also.
I was actually defending the edge and the competitive fire and was condemning the attitude that some fans sitting around me, mostly from Palatine and Barrington had about the Hoffman Estates wrestling team, Patrick himself and his dad.
Definitely did not say what I did to start any type of school bashing. Remember GBN is not in the MSL!

I like anyone that can take responsibility for their actions. Remember wrestling is just a sport, it is not your life. You have already made the first steps toward gaining respectability again. Remember this situation and how you acted and responded when you have a son and are teaching him about wrestling. always show sportsmanship. It says a lot about your character in a difficult situation.
Good luck with the rest of your season.

Scully has been wrestling for a long time I have seen him pull this stuff many times. I have been around wrestling for many years, and I don't post very much, but what he did after his match has to be one of the worst displays of sportsmanship I have ever seen, what a joke.

Patrick, I was mat side during your match. In the heat of battle and due to frustration, you made an error in judgment and acted in an unsportsman like
manner. Welcome to the real world. The match was intense and well wrestled. It is always tough to lose. You show character with your apology.
Focus the intensity and lose the temper. You are an excellent wrestler, good luck in the regionals. Everyone has made a stupid mistake, try hard not to make the same one again. You still have my support.

This is a huge step in becoming a Man. A Man is never perfect, knowing your not perfect, but can learn from your mistakes is everything.
To many want to lie or forget and make a excuse for there mistakes. The best way to make a mistake go away is to confront it. I for one do not think it is needed to be here on this board (the apology with this), Only because many on this board do not value a good apology. Hopefully, your real truce well be better served in school and on the mat with those who you respect the most! When you go the mat both of you want to win and one of you is going to lose. Think how you are when you win and think how how you are when you have lossed. Understanding how it hurts to lose is what makes the best winners!
It should only take one bad loss to learn a lesson of a life time. Good luck in the state run no matter where it will stop at and respect those who are on the step below or the ones who have step higher.
