Just curious, the IHSA rule states that you cannot enter in more than 4 varsity tournaments for the season. Once again, the IHSA limits every school to 4 varsity tournaments per year, including their conference tournament. While visiting sandburgs website, I noticed they have entered in 5 varsity tournaments (wheeling, hinsdale central, dvorak, the clash, and SICA conference). Although they sent their JV to the hinsdale central tournament, it still counts as a varsity tournament. The IHSA is very clear on this. This seems to be the same situation that happened to Mt. Carmel about 10 years ago. Just curious on what the rules are, it seems to be a clear cut violation. Thanks....

I believe the rule states 4 individual tournaments and I think the Clash was a dual team tournament which would count against the number of duals a team has but not as a tournament. You can schedule any amount of duals you want but a wrestler can only be in 21 duals and 4 tournaments.

that is incorrect.. dual team tournaments count as one of the four tournaments... but i believe the rule is more as an individual... so that if an individual person wrestles in 5 tournaments.. he is inelgible for regionals and so forth... what mt carmel did was wrestle thier whole varsity squard in 5 tournaments making thier 14 best wrestlers inelgible that is why the dual team tournament was under debate....

Here is the IHSA rule:
5.162 Team Limitations
No Boys Wrestling team representing a member school shall, in any one season, participate in more than:
a. eighteen (18) dates and no (0) tournaments exclusive of the IHSA series; or
b. seventeen (17) dates and one (1) tournament exclusive of the IHSA series; or
c. sixteen (16) dates and two (2) tournaments exclusive of the IHSA series; or
d. fifteen (15) dates and three (3) tournaments exclusive of the IHSA series; or
e. fourteen (14) dates and four (4) tournaments exclusive of the IHSA series.
Notice that it says no TEAM can exceed these limits. The tournament counts against the TEAMS that attended. IHSA recognizes two levels of competition in wrestling- varsity and JV. Where does it say that if a JV team competes against varsity teams, that counts against the varsity team's limit?

If you're successful and on a successful team you can get over 50 matches under the Illinois rules. In the team restrictions a "date" can be a triangual or quad meet, so you can have more than 18 duals. There is a match limit for individuals-- 21 matches (not counting tournaments) before regionals. An individual is also limited to 4 regular season tournaments. Four tourneys can easily give you an additional 20 matches. In the state series you can have the following: regionals (3-5 max), sectionals (3-5 max), state (4-7 max), and the dual team state series (5 max).
Why the rule? Because the school principals voted it in.

Wrong. A JV team competing in a varsity tournament counts towards that JV teams 4 tournaments (and those individuals on the team). What Sandburg did was perfectly legit.

Because of what happened to Mt. Carmel a few years back, I believe that every coach and athletic director take a real close look at what is scheduled. I believe that Mike Polz (who's been coaching for a lot of years) will closely monitor his wrestlers and count matches, to abide by IHSA rules. It's ludacris to suggest that teams like Sandburg would try to circumvent the system by sending JV teams to a tournament or schedule 5 tournaments or whatever your suggesting.
Why is it that when any team is good, people automatically suggest some sort of cheating. Can't it be that hard work, determination, good coaching, and talent pay off?
Leave it on the mat!
