From last year's roster (http://d128.org/ilwrestle/dvorak.pdf), here are the team that are NOT returning:
Vista, CA
Sycamore
Moline
Ponderosa, CO - Coach Tim Ottmann has retired after winning his 6th consecutive 5A CO state championship (8 total for him.) Congratulations Tim and best of luck in your retirement. You and your boys were a class act and it was an honor having you join us last year!
NEW to Dvorak in 2008:
Edwardsville
Kaukauna, WI - 2008 WI Division I State Runner-up
Springboro, OH
We are presently at 31 teams. There's still time to add one more. There's no better way to strengthen your program than to strengthen your schedule with the kind of competitiveness that Dvorak offers. Interested coaches should email Harlem A.D. Shane Turner (Shane.Turner@harlem122.org) ASAP.
Please help get the word out!

Ryan Root took over the Springboro program. They're young, but they've got talent. Nick LeForce, Cody Shivener, and Robert Jackson will lead them this year.

They go to the Clash. They can't do everything.

Montini goes to the clash and Dvorak
Montini and GBN both go to The Ironman and The Clash. Montini also goes to The Dvorak and The Cheesehead. They have no conference tournament so they get 4 other tournaments. GBN has gone to Conant for years along with the DVC tournament. GBN used to go to The Dvorak but not in recent years. They would have to drop Conant to pick up The Dvorak and I think they like the early season competition that Conant provides.

I think Montini does wrestle a confrence tourney now. Per the paper they did last season.
1. Driscoll
2. Saint Eds
3. Aurora Central Catholic
4. Marmion
5. Marian Central Catholic (Woodstock)
6. Montini
Maybe it is a mega dual?

If I recall correctly, it's a dual thing that doesn't count as a tournament, Also, I think that Montini lost only 1 match in 3-4 duals.

They also go to Wisconsin Rapids every year and used to do the Leyden Tournament but I believe they dropped Leyden when they started going to Ironman.

Thanks, it was real fun to come home and bring some of these Cali kids to IL. I am glad we got to be the first team from out of state to start a trend. Would love to see some IL teams come out here to CA to compete also....

What California tournaments do you reccomend for our Illinois teams?
Will Vista possibly be back in the future?

Twist,
If any Illinois teams were going to make the trip, I'd come to one of two tournaments:
1. Five Counties Invitational - Fountain Valley, CA - January 16-17 (this year)
2. Doc Buchanan Invitational - Clovis, CA - January 9-10 (this year)
Both are excellent tournaments and the 2 toughest tournaments in the state of California. Both are ranked in the Top 10 nationally by Wrestling USA magazine. I'll give the differences in my opinion.
Five Counties
PROS
Toughest tournament in the state with 93 teams last year
Easy access from out of state - within a 30 minute drive of LAX
Great finals - both competition and atmosphere
9 of the Top 10 teams in the state competed at the 2008 tournamentCONS
Hugely overcrowded gymnasium
Cramped mats and no visibility of clocks/score
Quarter-carry - if you lose, your opponent must make the quarter-finals in a 64-man bracket or you are eliminated from competitionDoc Buchanan
PROS
True double-elimination format for ALL competitors
3-sided electronic score clock for all mats
Nine full-size 40' mats
Excellent finals - both competition and atmosphere
7 of the Top 10 teams in the state competed at the 2008 tournamentCONS
Tougher spot to fly into (Fresno) and more costly - a 3-hour drive from Sacramento and San Francisco airports and a 4-hour drive from Los Angeles airport
2nd toughest tournament in CA with 50-60 teams

While doing a little homework on the Springboro team that's joining Dvorak this year, I came across a nice article about Coach Root's vision for the program (http://www.daytondailynews.com/story/content/oh/story/news/local/neighbors/2008/09/04/ddn090408zspIroot.html)...
Here is an excerpt from the article:
"Root, who started wrestling at age 5, was a state-level high school competitor in Illinois (Chatham Glenbard) and in Ohio (Lakota) and wrestled four years at Penn State. His high school staff will include NCAA champion Matt Lackey, Olympian Kevin Bracken, NCAA placer Sam Hazewinkle and NCAA champion Teyon Ware."
Wow...that's some staff!

I thought he was living in the Chicago area? Also wasn't he coaching with Gilbert's club? I know I talked to his Dad at the Sox's playoff game and he didn't mention Kevin moving. Anyone have more info.
