Overall a pretty good dual, it has been a long time since the Cats have beat Sandwich. The Cats appear to be on their way to their 1st I-8 Conference Championship in many years.

The meet was ok…it just wasn’t that interesting. Besides the heavyweight match, the wrestlers were wrestling to not get pinned:
Heavyweight: Boring match, takedown in the first 10 seconds for Wilmington and then nothing for the rest of the time.
103: Not much to speak of, just pin for Wilmington. No word on Olson for sandwich, was seen walking around in street clothes.
112: Warpecha takes down Goodwin, gets the pin in the third period.
119: Sifft makes 119 somehow, he started the season wrestling 135. Looked tired but gets the tech over Rodriguez.
125: Rud wins 18-6 over vercelli, vercelli looked to just stay off his back.
130: Not to bad of a match for fowler, keeps within 8 until getting pinned in the last 30 seconds.
135: Beltran stays away from Jones, gets away losing 8-2. White was seen warming up but didn’t make weight.
140: Stall out match, Lockwood just looking to not get thrown by Forrester. Forrester looked sick and terrible.
145: Olson and Skorup both weighed in here, Olson gets sent out and manages to lose only 6-0 to Peters. Peters didn’t look to good, looked weak from weight cutting.
152: Skorup wins 10-0 but didn’t really do anything. Looked sick out there like he couldn’t wait to get off the mat, Combes just trying not to get pinned.
160: Imel gets pinned by Murphy.
171: Cervantes trying not to get pinned, Dziuben wins 12-2.
189: First year wrestler for sandwich, Alberico pins him in the first.
215: Vercelli with the pin in under 30 seconds.
the meet was really a pin or be pinned kind of thing, lots of stalling on both sides.

The Sandwich Coach actually did a pretty good job keeping it closer with the lineup he had last night; Sandwich up 22-21 with 4 matches left. I thought Casillas, Nelson, V. Vercelli, Lockwood, Combes and Czuban all had very good matches, especially Lockwood; doing their part and contributing to the Team Victory. I was disappointed with the uninspirational efforts from Jones and Peters, they are much better wrestlers than the lack luster matches they had last night. I think the boys on both teams, for the most part, new what their role was and what they had to do and came out with their best effort. I think the only matches that could be considered "upsets" were Casillas' win over Young and Ryan Nelson's big pin at 103. If Nelson can stay at 103, he will continue to get better and begin peaking at the right time. All in all, I thought it was a pretty good night of wrestling with only a few disappointing matches/performances.

I want to thank everyone for your summaries of the dual. I wish I could have seen it myself but what you have said is pretty much what I heard about the match. I heard 2-3 Sandwich guys missed weight. I agree with the Coach Gerrish reference. I heard if Sandwich did not have a big lead by the time Rud, Warpecha, Sifft, Forester, and Skorup were done wrestling that Wilmington would come roaring back and I guess that is what happened. I would have thought all 5 of these Sandwich guys would have gotten pins so the Wilmington guys must have done a pretty good job preventing the sticks. Call it stalling or good defensive wrestling but it must have worked. I also heard Matthews reffed the match. Did he call a good match or did he entertain as he tends to do?

I don't think, for this match anyway, that even if the 2-3 Sandwich boys had made weight, it would have made much of a difference. Sandwich did make adjustments in their line up which all worked to their advantage. The only adjustments Coach Murphy made was bumping Jones and Peters down and Combes up to 152. I don't think those moves helped Wilmington at all, in fact, I think that because of the poor efforts and performances by Jones and Peters it probably cost the Cats a few points. I'm not 2nd guessing the moves, I just don't think it worked out as well as it should have. Vince Vercelli and Matt Combes are both solid wrestlers with alot of heart that never quit, they did exactly what they were supposed to do last night. Drew Lockwood, when he comes out focused and stays focused, can hang with just about anyone in the state at that weight. Jones and Peters are a mystery to me this year; talent wise, they are easily among the top 4-5 wrestlers at their weights, their drive and focus seems to come and go this year, especially lately.
Matthews did a pretty good job, better than alot I have seen this year, and of course he was part of the show- can't teach an old zebra new tricks.......or is it they can't change their stripes.... Anyway, he was entertaining without being annoying last night.

What is the deal with Jones this year? A lot of times he looks like he doesn't want to be out on the mat. Also, is Sifft going 119 or Rud.
