SANDWICH — Sandwich might be young, but it showed it is starting to come of age on Thursday.
For an equally youthful Ottawa team, the story was much different.
The Indians claimed a pair of dual victories on their home mats, defeating Dixon 35-33 and the Pirates 50-21. In the evening's other matchup, OTHS fell 40-21 to NCIC Reagan Division rival Dixon.
The Indians lineup features just three seniors, and until Thursday, coach Josh McCarty had yet to see those three experienced wrestlers in the lineup at the same time. However, they were back, and so was the dominance their fans have come to know.
"We got off to a rocky start at the beginning of the year,"McCarty said. "We were missing some kids. Now we have the kids in the weights where we need them, and we're learning more each time out.
"We're still young. We have only three seniors and two of them have been out. Their leadership will be a boost to a team that has a lot of young talent. We've had some sophomore stepping up to the plate and making important contributions all year long."
That was evident on Thursday.
In the opening dual of the evening, SHS earned seven victories, including four pins and a technical fall. The technical fall came from freshman Alphonse Vruno, a terrific young 103-pounder who already has made waves as an underclassmen. That was followed two weight classes later by senior Blake Tirevold's pin at 119 pounds.
The McCaslin connection of Lon and Collin at 130 and 140 pounds earned pins. Collin's pin helped bust open what had been a back-and-forth battle, making it 23-15.
That set the stage for some experience to take over as Jake Hankes earned a pin at 145 pounds. The stage then switched back to the youngsters as 160-pounder Nolan Gipe earned an impressive 6-4 decision in overtime. Sophomore Tim Schmitt then posted an easy 8-1 decision at 171 pounds to put the match away.
"He's wrestling to a level almost like a senior," McCarty said of Schmitt.
Sandwich 50, Ottawa 21
In the evening's final bout, the Pirates were no match for the talented Indians. Sandwich won the first nine weight classes to take a 44-0 advantage.
Most of those victories were rather convincing. Tirevold pinned Jared Jones in 29 seconds before Vinnie DeFily beat Zach Harvey with a first-period pin. Lon McCaslin produced a 19-2, technical fall win over Jim Yates, and Collin McCaslin beat Ty Benckendorf 8-2 at 140 pounds.
After Hankes pinned Ottawa's Anthony Brown at 145 pounds, the Pirates' Derek Martin had a good shot at producing a win for OTHS. He led Sandwich's Sam Hill 3-2 following an escape with 1 minute, 30 seconds left in the bout. However, Hill produced a nice spinning takedown with 10 seconds left to earn the narrow 4-3 decision.
Despite the loss, OTHS coach Pete Marx was pleased with the way Martin wrestled, especially following an impressive victory over his Dixon opponent.
"Everytime he goes out there he does everything you want," Marx said. "He went whistle-to-whistle in both of his matches. That kid showed a lot of heart, and he's been showing that all year. He was disappointed he lost there, but I talked to him and said it was OK. It's like we tell the kids it's not whether you win or lose every match. That's not what we're looking for. We want you to go out there and give it your best shot. He's been doing that all year."
Schmitt and freshman Alex Dallen also earned pins for the Indians. For Dallen, it was his first victory of the year, and it came in impressive fashion.
The freshman actually trailed Ottawa's Ryan Keith by a considerable 10-0 score midway through the second period at 103 pounds. However, he caught Keith in a mistake, rolled him over for a takedown and then notched a pin with 16 seconds left in the period.
Ottawa didn't go winless. Alex Bishop also was trailing in his match — 6-2 to Tyler Crane — before notching a pin in the second period at 215 pounds. Kody Schott followed with an 8-3 decision at 285 pounds, and Chris Downey closed out the match with a pin at 112 pounds.
