Dylan Reel scored the tying...make that the winning...takedown on a spin-behind at the buzzer of the third period for 1-0, 0-1, 1-1 victory over Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma to win the 160-pound Junior Greco-Roman title.
Crutchmer, who finished second in the FILA Cadet Nationals at 167.25 pounds, was considerably thicker than Reel, who won that event at 152. He actually controlled the action most of the first period, almost scoring a point on a pushout about 40 seconds in before Reel circled back in just in time. He was a top in the clinch and scored a point on a gut...a little sloppy, but the judge and the chair confirmed a point...to win it 1-0.
Crutchmer scored a point on a pushout just before the clinch in the second period...Reel had the whizzer but went out first. Reel defended the clinch, but couldn't score on the feet in the remaining 19 seconds, and it went to a third period.
Reel again had to avoid a pushout in the third period. It was scoreless going into the clinch. Crutchmer won the toss and chose top. Using a reverse lift, he scored a point immediately for a 1-0 lead, and tried to push away Reel as he kept charging to try to score the winnign takedown over the final 25 seconds. Reel never stopped wrestling and finally got the point, which stood after a video review.
Joey Moorhouse, by the way, beat Taylor Massa for third place at 152.
