Illinois finished the week with a record three team championships, scoring a 72-64 victory over runnerup Iowa in the Junior National freestyle tournament.

Matt Garelli (98) and Eddie Klimara (125) got Illinois off to a flying start with wins in their championship matches and got some backup from Trevor Jauch and Joe Gosinski at 130, then from Nick Dardanes and Blaise Butler at 140 to clinch the team title by mid-session. Even though they lost both head-to-head matches against Iowa in the final session, Illinois actually extended its lead from the seven-point margin they held entering the round.
Garelli was never pushed in a 3-0, 6-0 victory over Mark Raghunandan of New York, and Klimara’s conditioning was key in a three-period win over Zach Horan of Pennsylvania. Horan won the first period 2-0 and took a 1-0 lead late in the second period, but Klimara threw Horan to his back late in the period. The referee called for a fall, but it was waved off by the chair as the period ended.
But fighting off his back took something out of Horan, and he required some attention from his corner between periods while Klimara looked fresh.
And the third period was predictable. Klimara scored twice on pushouts as he simply wore Horan down.
After losing a match he had won at the end of the Friday morning session, Butler gained some redemption, as his win was the one that clinched the title for Illinois.
Edwin Cooper lost in a first-period clinch at 140, and then it was all Jacob Ballweg of Iowa after that. After scoring a second-period takedown, Ballweg finished the match with a tight ankle lace that he scored with multiple times.
Chris Lopez lost in two periods to Greg Kuhar of Ohio at 285.
