I used the newest (as of 12/22/05) rankings from the Wrestling Report, Intermat, WIN, AWN, and the Wrestling Mall to compile individual rankings (bottom half of this post). Let me know if you want details of the method of compilation conquistadors@hotmail.com. From there, I used the tournament distribution of points [20,16, 14, 12, 10, 9, 7, 6, 4,4,4,4,3,3,3,3,2,2,2,2, 1,1,1,1 for 1st through 24th] to produce team scores.

One thing that is always evident when I do this type of analysis is just how hard it is to have good teams. This is why I all-too-often make curmudgeonly remarks to posters who claim that their team “should” be so much better. The competition is tough!

Among interesting results are just how strong of a tournament team Iowa appears to be.

With 58 teams “scoring points” (a pretty good approximation to what actually happens), this means that one-third of Div I teams do not have one single wrestler in the top 24 in the country. A sobering thought.
Note that potential top performers Chris Fleeger and John Masa are not included.

If I’ve tallied points in error, I apologize.

Just a few things i noticed, CP schlatter should be ranked a little higher considering he is the only person to beat Trent Paulson this year so far, and he only lost to one other person the entire year. And why is Creig Henning 10th right behind Manotti when Henning wrestled manotti and won this year, i thought that was very interesting especially. Good job sorting out 149 though.

Mr. Achilles (how's that tendon doing?:) )

To be honest, I made almost zero decisions. The rankings above are a compilation of the five ranking services that I listed. So my ranking is basically an average of where the wrestling "gods" were at when I did it. In just about every ranking service one can find anomalies of one type or an other. So this average tends to smooth out such "outliers." I usually prefer to do this type of analysis when all five services have produced a ranking during the same week. Unfortunately, two of the services were one week behind, which meant that the results of Reno wasn't included in those two.

I like how you have U of I wrestlers in bold, but why not put Northwestern and Northern Illinois wrestlers in bold too?

Mr. Ugly:

Thanks for checking in.

Sorry not to be clear, but I'm an Illini wrestling fan (only because I taught there for a few years in the late 90s-- I really should be a Badger fan 'cause I went to grad school in Madison). And since I live in St. Louis I'm also a Missouri Tiger fan (and on the Missouri website I highlighted Mizzou wrestlers). When Illini and Tigers wrestle it is like have two friends compete, as I want both to win. Oh, and I could root for Minnesota since my son is now a student at the U of M and the school is treating him very well (for what I pay, they should:)).

But mostly I'm a college wrestling fan. I try to post information about Illinois and Missouri on national forums, as there is usually more than enough Iowa & Oklahoma State.

I'm heading to Midlands, so I'll be seing Illinois, Northwestern, and Northern Illinois.
