Princeton Invite Preview
By Flashy Classy AHost
The 43rd annual Lyle King Princeton Invite kicks off this Friday. The P.I.T is being compared to the class AA Dvorak tournament for class A. This year’s tournament is sure to be one for the ages! With 10 ranked wrestlers, led by returning state champions, Matt Wenger (#1 at 171) and Darren Olsen (#1 152), Dakota is looking to run away with the team trophy once again.
Wilmington, currently ranked #2 in the state behind Dakota hopes to make a big statement this weekend as well. Six of the 14 weight classes will have ranked wrestlers from the Wildcats. Seniors Josh Peters (#2 at 160) and Drew Lockwood (#3 at 145) are looking to lead their team this weekend. Wilmington’s conference foe, Coal City will also be involved in the team running. John Odeen (#1 at 130) hopes to add on the P.I.T to his long list of medals. He will be joined by 8 other ranked Coalers.
Yorkville hopes to come in and be the spoiler to any of the Class A teams. Yorkville will be led by Adam Stine, a young but talented wrestler. Ryan Kick hopes to come into the 160 lb weight class and make some noise for the Foxes.
With over 60 wrestlers ranked from around the state, the Princeton Invite will be a “can’t miss tournament.” Returning from last year, Tyler Clark (#1 at 119) a Junior from Orion hopes to add another first place medal. Princeton’s own Ty Taylor (#3 at 125) and Zach Bird (#2 at 152) will hope to make some upsets on there home mats. Harvard, ranked #5 as a team will also showcase some of their best, Seniors Travis Schutt (#9 at 215) and Bernie Stott (#5 at 189) hope to raise their team to the top and upset everybody. Don’t forget about the South! The Vandals of Vandalia bring in some top notch wrestlers such as Senior JJ Hawk (#1 at 275) and Jo-E Smith (#2 at 145). Vandalia hopes to be in the running at the end as well.
It will be an all out war on the blue and white mats in Princeton this weekend! Illinois Matmen will be there to cover the even with live up to the minute bracket results. (note: this will be done on a PDA type device. Be patient with Flashy!)
