That looks like a decent bracket. The Greco and Freestyle duals are an awesome event! It doesn't get much better than that. Everyone brings their A game, and there are some real dogfights. Go Illinois!

I went to the practices and they have a SOLID Greco team, top to bottom. Max, Riley, E. Coleman, and Reed were super solid. Its going to be a dogfight, but our team should medal. Go Illinois!

After a brutal championship draw Team Illinois is beating Cali as I type. Team Illinois dropped the first round dual with Pennsylvania's #1,43-29.
California gave Missouri run for their money and a lot of people think Missouri is the team to beat.
Illinois will have Wisconsin in the last round. Wisconsin is yet to be beaten. Which is no surprise. The Cheese-heads were the 2005 Schoolboy Greco National Dual Champs in Indy. They will be tough.
Looks like Ellis Coleman is out as of right now.

Illinois beats a tough California team 43-33. California lost to Wisconsin 36-36 on criteria in round one of the Championship bracket. If Illinois can beat Wisconsin they should place second in their pool and will be wrestling for third place in Greco.

That is correct and I think they can pull it off too(beating WI). I hope Coleman being out @112 doesn't come back to hurt the team to much.
Speaking of Colemans... how about Lilashawn Coleman's victory over Jordan Oliver(PA) in round one??? Nowry over Thornock(CA) is a big win. I don't think Damonte Riley or Hecox has lost yet. A lot of good things going for this Illinois team.

I heard (thru the grapevine) Ellis Coleman may have had a concussion so he did not wrestle.
Kent Williams moved up from 105 and filled in nicely @ 112 and Pinned CA and beat WI 4-1, 3-1. So it's nice to see that not having Ellis @ 112 didn't "come back to bite us"!

Bumping up at a high level tournament like this is not easy. Those are HUGE wins for Kent Williams and Team Illinopis. Good example of Team Illinois' depth.

Pennsylvania #2
Indiana
TEAM ILLINOIS
Missouri
Oklahoma #2
Texas
Washington
Again, I like this draw for our Cadets. Missouri will be very tough and PA's #2 will be solid along with Washington too. I think they can come out of this pool and make the championship pool.
I counted 29 teams in the freestyle tournament... 29!!!

Illinois loses to Indiana. Illinois wins 10 matches to Indiana's 7 matches but for some reason the Illinois kids have a hard time staying off their backs. Especially the bigger kids in the lineup. Illinois should never lose to Indiana in an event like this.....Illinois still has a long way to go in Freestyle, looks like Illinois will be heading to the consolation bracket unless they can beat Missouri and PA 2.

Hey Max, just for fun, here the line-up I would have taken.
I don't want to start any kind of negative post and disrespect our freestyle team who is there. They are warriors in their own right. This dual tournamnet is one tough tournamnet loaded with great freestyle wrestlers. These USAW Duals(Schoolboys,Cadets,Juniors) are brutal with just outstanding competition.
With that being said, I like the idea of the team being filled with our FS state champs. I thought that's what we were sending and I had HIGH, HIGH expectations especially after the greco tournamnet. Along with our FS State Champs you need to fill in with our top talent that didn't/couldn't compete(like Jeff-injury?) at FS/GR State.
It's real simple, take your FS/GR State Champs, your studs who were unable to wrestle at the state tournemants and go fight the rest of the country. Look at our Greco team. For the most part, that was our GR State Champs.
I would be curious as to know who was asked and who declined the feestyle Team Illinois.

I know most of the kids there very well, but your probably right, this could turn negative fast.

At the junior level some of the FR and GR state champs weren't even asked to participate. I suspect it was the same at the Cadet level. That doesn't make the selection process wrong. Some of us just want to know what it is and who is making the selections.

If you look at to a previous thread, it might have even been this one, I asked if the process of putting together the team was political. It seems like a lot of kids are being put on the team because of the buddy system. Now, I'm not complaining because thats how the world works and you'd be a fool to disagree, but I'm just saying that "SOME" of the choices are a little suspect. For example, there were 5 kids at 215/275 for Cadet GR, why???? and no backup for the eventually injured Coleman (who is wrestling both styles). Those are good questions, that we all know the answer to and don't have to say.

It is an exstreamly political and covert operation, but you know what, wrestling on the the dual team does not make or break a good wrestler. What makes a wrestler in-season is Champaign, what makes or breaks a wrestler in the off-season is FILA JR, FILA Cadet, and Fargo. The kids that are wrestling right now had nothing to do with the politics, there all good kids and lets hope they win them all. If anyone wants to challenge the system, thats ok but right now is bad timing just like Maximus previously stated.

SouthsideCoach your 112 pounder, while he is good, was not taken to the greco duals for a reason and if you wanted to get an explanation you should have asked the coaches, at the camp practice last week, instead of promoting some bogus conspiracy theory on the internet. The dual team capacity says that they cannot take alternates at every weight and there was already an alternate at 105 and an alternate at 119 and it would not be a smart strategy to take an alternate at three consecutive weight classes. By the way, the two guys at 105 really stepped it up and showed that it was a good decision!
Also there was definitely not 5 guys taken at 215/275 and once again I think you should have talked to the coaches about that if you had a question.
All in all the greco kids did awesome and second guessing the team choice really takes away from what they did. Thats just my opinion.

My son was asked to wrestle on the Greco Team immediately following the finals @ State. He was not asked to wrestle on the Freestyle Team. I can only assume and understand he wasn't asked because he did not place at State.
No conspiracy; the Greco Duals coaches were asking the palce winners if they were interested in being on the Team immediately following the finals. I'm not sure how the Freestyle team was selected.
However once at Greco Duals my son was asked to stay for Freestyle to fill a hole at 105. I don't know who was originally scheduled at that spot.

For what it's worth here's my take on ALL the FS/GR Team Illinois memebers...
At the Schoolboy level State Champs have first rights for the spot. It seems to work best because at that age most of the kids are still new to FS/GR and other then Northern Plains, at the Novice age, there's really no way to judge their FS/GR skills. Basically FS and GR State is the only chance to prove your worth as a freestyle/greco-guy and make the team.
At the Cadet level the kids are starting to be known in the wrestling community and team selection is the way to go. But, that selection process should also be preformance based. Just because your an IHSA "AA" medalist doesn't mean you have first rights on Team Illinois(FS or GR). It should help, but you still should have to prove your a solid freestyler/greco-guy too. Cadets can now wrestle in USAW Regional events, FILA Cadets, and IL States to prove their talents against the rest of their in state competition. Again, FS/GR should not be the only determining factor but, at the Cadet level it's one of the only times you will see head-to-head competition and that should count for something.
At the Junior level selecting the team is the only way to go. By now the top kids are well known for their folk, free, and greco skills. This is why Team Illinois coaches "get paid the big bucks":) . Selecting the best line-up is now possible and it's their responsibilty to make the right picks. FS/GR state tournament preformances are not even required. Altho, it takes away for the actual state tournament, it's not a must for these guys. For example, is there any doubt Albert White, BJ, Mikey B, or Ty Clark shouldn't be on the team??? No brainers. Maybe a little more political but I figure the best kids are being selected so it must be working. I know Mr. Reynolds wants to win. Bormet wants to wins and you just have to trust they are selecting the best kids out there.

What weight is Tony Ramos wrestling on Junior dual team? Why is he needed on that team when Clayton Rush is 112? Illinois would have been better having him on Cadet team.

Tony Ramos is not wrestling on either team. He is going to Russia the last I knew. BJ Futrell is on the Junior team.
Illinois lost to Missouri 39-35. Illinois won 9 matches to Missouri's 8, but Missouri had 3 pins and recieved 1 forfeit. Illinois had 1 pin. So the consolation bracket it is. That is 2 duals they lost even though they won more matches. Hopefully they will do some damage in the consolation bracket.

Unreal... twice! 5 points is a huge number at these duals. They add up WAY to fast. Nice to see our guys still fighting.
The consolation bracket will be tough too. Would love to see them win that.

First of all I don't have a 112 pounder that is wrestling this summer but I know the guy who is coaching the kid I think you are referring to and he told me that he wasn't allowed to go to the duals because the team was to full. he understood why but I don't. You can't tell me that there are NO politics with who goes and who doesn't. Mabye I should have gone to the practice and asked the coaches but I don't have any kids wrestling on the team so it wasn't that big of a deal. but don't sit here and ack like no politics are invloved. by the way... there were 4 or 5 different names at 215 and 275

Many of the dual coaches are straight-up but are unfortunately victims of the political process themselves. I think that may be what you are running into here SouthsideCoach.

I don't know how they select the teams. But I do know that my son was asked to be on the Junior Greco Team after the Greco State Championships (which he did win) and then was called again a week later. Unfortunately, due to previous commitments, schedule, etc., he could not participate this year. Looking at the team members posted in another thread, some of them are the Greco State Champs, some took 2nd place and some were not even listed. So your guess is as good as the next person's as to how they select the Dual Teams.

Southsidecoach you confuse me. First on another thread last Thursday you said . . .
"I went to the practices and they have a SOLID Greco team, top to bottom"
Then two days later you get on here and say. . .
"Mabye I should have gone to the practice"
First off you say that the team looks really solid and that you think that they will do well and then you go on some conspiracy laden tirade about how kids are being chosen. Oh and by the way I can sit here and tell you that the kids for that team were not chosen for political reasons.
and if this is true . . ."I don't have any kids wrestling on the team" . . . then why did you say . . . "I went to the practices and they have a SOLID Greco team, top to bottom" . . . if a person has nobody on the team why would they go to the practices. . . hmmmmm sounds fishy.
As far as the 215/275 thing goes. . . the 189 pounders and the 215 pounders were moved around a lot to give the team the best shot at winning.
Oh well enough of this negativity. . .Good luck to the Junior F/S and Greco Teams. They should be pretty tough to beat for any team!

Once again, you seem to be really sensitive to this issue. I said I went to practices and no I didn't talk to any of the coaches. Second, mabye my son is on the team, or I know a couple of the kids from my area hmmmmmmmmm.............. but thats just a thought. Theres nothing fishy about not having backups at the right spots. Example, at 112 where you have a kid who is cutting serious weight, and wrestling both styles. You must be one of the coaches and if not then I don't know why you're getting so sensitive. Please don't sit here and think that nothing that goes on is political. I was just making a statement and if thats too much for you to handle then stay off the forum.

Almost everything in Illinois wrestling involves some form of politics. Someone said both Mr Reynolds and Mr Bormet want to win. Now that is a true statement. I don't know about the past (except the last 2 years) but they have been planning this years junior team for a long time. I expect this team will do Illinois very proud.

My son was asked to be on the team minutes after winning state.
He didn't go because for the 1ST time in 6 years we put a family event before wrestling. Was Illinois hurt by that? Yes! .............but sometimes families are more important!
While it wasn't the case for my son I know one kid that didn't go because of money but was too proud or shy to ask.
If illinois would cover more of the cost this wouldn't be a problem. I would gladly pay an extra $10 at the qaulifier and at state for each style to support a national team.

I can't think of a kids sport or activity that doesn't involve some form of politics. The politics in wrestling seem minimal to the other sports my kids have participated in.
The state FS and GR champs were not necessarily the best wrestlers. The coaches should have some discretion to choose the team. If people view this as political thats too bad. The coaches are voluntaring their time, they have chosen a talented group of kids and we wish them the best of luck. GO ILLINOIS!!!!

I really agree with this post. The state champ is not always the best fit for a dual team situation. The coaches will lean towards the wrestlers that they feel can and have performed the best on the national stage. Wait and see how the team does, especially the junior freestyle team. If the team is not competitive or very weak then we should worry about the selection process. I doubt if that wil be the case this year.
