Due to an oversite by the wrestling coach Alleman is forced to share the WB6 title with UT. This article in QC times has all the details. What effect this has on Saturdays regional remains to be seen. Not having the head coach available is a big factor.

Forfeit forces Alleman to share title

Rock Island Alleman, which appeared to clinch the Western Big Six Conference wrestling title last weekend, will forfeit its outright championship because five of its wrestlers participated in too many dual meet matches this season.

Four of the five wrestlers in question who posted victories over Galesburg on Friday must forfeit their individual wins, plus the Pioneers must forfeit their team win because of the violation. They will share the title with United Township.

Alleman coach John Wetherell self-reported the violation when he became aware of the Illinois High School Association by-law 5.163 which says, “Students who participate on a school squad in boys wrestling may participate in no more than 21 matches in any one season exclusive of tournaments.’’

The Galesburg meet in which the five Pioneer wrestlers participated was their 22nd dual.

In addition to the forfeit, Wetherell will not be allowed to coach the team during Saturday’s regional competition at Riverdale High School but could return the following week at the sectional meet should Pioneer wrestlers advance. The Alleman program will be on probation through the 2005-06 wrestling season.

Assistant coach Sean Hoover will direct the team Saturday.

The probationary status does not deprive the school or wrestlers involved in the program of any of their privileges to compete Saturday. Alleman must submit a written plan detailing corrective measures it will take to make sure the school is in compliance with the by-laws.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,’’ Wetherell said in a statement. “I feel responsible for what has happened, but I am sure the kids will put this behind them and channel their energies toward the upcoming regional.

“They are a fantastic group of young men and I want nothing but what is best for them.’’

When Alleman defeated Moline last Thursday, plus Quincy and Galesburg in a double-dual Friday, it was the 5-0 Pioneers’ first league title since 1972. The three dual wins had boosted the team’s overall record to 21-1, but it will now revert to 20-2.

“With the forfeiture of the win over Galesburg, we will now share the title (with United Township),’’ Alleman athletic director Larry Schulte said. “This does not in any way diminish the accomplishments made by the Alleman wrestlers during the regular season, and was not done to gain a competitive edge.’’

I've seen the Alleman team wrestle and my gut feeling is that this situation will only fire them up more, so the other teams at the Riverdale regional better be prepared.

Why will there coach not be able to be at regionals?

That must be the penalty. I'm actully glad its him and not the 5 wrestlers. Well not glad that its happening at all, but its unfortunate. As an earlier post stated, this will only fuel the fire more!

As you all know the Alleman wrestling program made a simply mistake... The wrestlers involved all feel very bad for what happened.... Coach Wetherell feels terrible about the entire situation.... However this goes to show what wrestling is truely about: Learning life lessons and dealing with the hand your dealt... Mistakes happen and that is ok.. On behalf of Chuck and him losing his undefeated season... This happened this year for a reason, and he has come to understand that... Hopefully this will not hurt him or his fellow teammates chances of earning their all conference status that they rightfully deserve... Also these wrestlers will learn to adjust to adversity... Life is full of adversity and these young men will learn all about it as they continue to grow... I am sure the loss of the coach will do nothing but motivate these wrestlers to give him another chance in the corner for the entire team... And for him to get another oppurtunity to coach each and everyone of these wrestlers on the mat again Alleman will have to win regionals... If they show up feeling sorry for themselves, many will move on and continue towards their individual goals... But if they show up with that fire in their eyes, and are willing to give every peice of heart and soul in every match this Saturday they will earn the right to see their coach in the corner for another great go around....

Does anyone know what will happen?
No...

It all depends which team will show up....

All I can say is... I cant wait till Saturday!

I am confused by this. Dont get me wrong I do not want to see these athletes deprived of their opportunity to compete but the rule is there for a reason. And one part of this is that they do not receive an unfair advantage by competing more than their opponents. A few years ago Kankakee had four athletes wrestle in more tournaments than allowed and these young men, at no fault of their own like these alleman kids, were not allowed to compete at regionals. I am sure that this coach feels bad but he knows the rule

Correct me if I am wrong about this. The Kankakee kids could not wrestle regionals because they wrestled too many tournaments. The Alleman kids had to forfeit a match because they wrestled too many duals. Therefore, they can still wrestle regionals because they have not gone over their maximum tournament participation. Am I correct on this?

Indeed you are Willy. The kids will be just fine. Coach W will miss regionals but be back for sectionals. Its unfortunante as I stated before, but these kids will only look forward from this point on.

So based on that logic they will not be allowed to compete in the state duals if they win the regional

No, they will be able too. Different rules for different things is what Willy is getting to...I think.

Then that would follow too many duals no more duals.
too many tournaments no more tournaments
You are showing your colors be objective if that is possible

Showing my colors?? LOL I'm so far away from Alleman its not even funny. I'm all for the kids though. Its for them. The coach has to sit out. So there is the punishment.

Why does Chuck lose his undefeated season? No one beat him. Since he was not allowed to be in the match he wrestled, doesn't the team have to forfeit the match, not Chuck? Chuck just loses a win, right? I mean it was like a physical embodiment of forfeit beat the Moline wrestler, right?

Chuck and the other 3 (Hinzman, Sonneville and Warlop) all did wrestle physically and won. Therefore, they get that win taken away. Now a good question was just brought up to me in email. If they get the wins taken away from them and its now a forefeit....does that really count in their loss column? Interesting question...

I talked with Dave Gannaway this morning on the issue at hand... He said either Chuck can take a loss in the loss column or not wrestle the state series... So I guess we can mark Chuck at 34-1*****... However I would add a few astricks...
