When thinking about coaching legends Tom Brands and Dan Gable that coach the Hawkeyes Ward stated, "I have a couple of Coach Gable’s tapes and I try to use a lot of his technique in my matches."

According to Ward, St. Rita Head Coach Dan Carroll was very happy with the decision. The good news spread around all associated with the Mustangs. "In fact a lot of alumni seemed excited for me," replied Ward.

Fellow state champ Albert White has not made a decision on his college choice, but Ward expressed his desire to keep wrestling with his workout partner. "I would love for us to be a package. I really want him (White) to come with me but he must go where he is a good fit," said Ward. "My plan is to sign early so that I don't have to worry about this college stuff during my final season and can concentrate on wrestling."
