I would stick with Tann at 165. Baima has never made AA in his college career. Tann has done it 2 out of 2 times and placed higher than his seed both times. Yes it was at 149, but he will adjust to 165 just fine. I hope they both (Tann & Baima) make AA this year, but if I had to pick one I would pick Tann simply because he has been there and done it twice before.
I don't think the jump to 165 will be that rough on Tann. He is plenty big enough to do it. He is going to be one of the quickest and most athletic 165's in the country, and he won't be too small for 165. Michigan had a guy named Ryan Churella make the same jump (from 149 to 165) two years ago and he did alright. He placed 4th his first year at 165 and then 2nd last year.

I would choose Nick Baima still, altough Baima has not AA before this is because he has gotten hurt the week before nationals the last two years. If he stays healthy i see him going farther then Tann this year

We might get to find out early this year since Michigan will be at Midlands. Maybe we will get to see a Tannenbaum/Baima match. I expect Tannenbaum to perform much better and more consistantly this season now that he isn't cutting so much weight. I think he is going to have a year similar to his freshman year when he went 36-5, won the Big 10, and took 4th at the NCAA. I will take the 2x AA come March, but I hope they both make AA.

I have to admit I kept asking myself, "why is this so hard?" while I was trying to put this list together. The simple fact of the matter is last season was a rather down year for Illinois (the state not the University).
Anyhow here's the team I came up with based upon how they wrestled in college (high school stats don't matter in the NCAA) so far. These are all pre-season picks not, a lot of these picks will probably change by the end of season, but heading into the 06-07 season, this is how it looks from here.
125: Pat Castillo (NIU) RS-Junior - NCAA Qualifier, Midlands runner-up
133: Daniel Dennis (Iowa) Sophomore - Midlands placewinner, failed to qualify after a strong start. Impressive for a true freshman.
141: Casio Pero (Illinois) RS-Senior - 2x NCAA Qualifier, 2005 All-American
149: Mike Grimes (NIU) RS-Senior- 2005 NCAA Qualifier, top 12 finish in 05
157: Mike Poeta (Illinois) RS-Sophmore - 2006 NCAA Qualifier Midlands runner-up, great season last year wrestling up weight class. NCAA Title contender this year.
165: The one weight with some deep competiton
Eric Tannenbaum (Michigan) RS-Junior - 2x NCAA All-American @ 149. Struggled a bit in his sophomore season. Should compete well now that weight is no longer a factor. Could he get a little revenge for former team Ryan Churella if he sees Johny Hendricks?
Nick Baima (Northern Iowa) RS-Senior - 3x NCAA Qualifier. You cannot ignore a 35-4 record and being named Outstanding Wrestler of The Midlands and The West Regional. A broken hand slowed his progress and factored in his disappointing finish in 06.
This one is too close to call. Tannenbaum is a two-time AA at 149, but is the jury is still out on him at 165. Baima is ranked higher than Tannenbaum but has struggled late in the season. Take your pick.
174: Another weight without a clear cut favorite
Donny Renyolds (Illinois) RS-Senior - 2x NCAA Qualifier. Knee injuries have slowed Donny down a bit, but if the knees hold, should be a legit contender to All-American.
Kenny Robertson (EIU) RS-Senior - 2x NCAA Qualifier. Phenominal leg rider. Went 3-2 at '06 NCAA Tournament. EIU's schedule hurts his late season performances.
Renyolds holds an 7-5 early season win over Robertson in '05 Missouri Open. Take your pick.
184: Jake Perz (EIU) RS-Junior - 2006 NCAA Qualifier. With 17-14 record not exactly the overall favorite, but with NIU starting untested red shirt freshman Duke Burk and Illinois starting former two-time IHSA state champion Pat Brownson, who hasn't seen the Illini starting lineup yet. Perz on NCAA experience alone ges the nod hear.
197: Mike Tamillow (Northwestern) Junior - 2006 NCAA Qualifier. I can personally say that I have been impressed with Mike's performane so far. I worked out with him pretty consistantly the spring of his senior year and I can't believe how quickly he adjusted to the college game. Although training with Jake Herbert everyday can't hurt either! Should finally attain All-American status this season.
275: Joe Sapp (NIU) Senior - 3x MAC placewinner. Has two wins over Northwestern's highly regaurded Dustin Fox. Joe can keep it close with anyone.
