19th. He is listed in the best of the rest behind wrestlers he has not beaten.
In our opinion he kinda fell off at the end of the year but is still recruitable as was proven by his signing with UTC. Fagiano, Brantley, Bruce, Ward, Schoen and Penny were all big men that placed higher than him. Also he was not a force during the off season. In fact I believe he was a no show so he was not going to get a top ten ranking from Intermat.
We do have him preseason ranked 4th in the state behind some of the aboved named wrestlers. 189 and especially 215 is loaded with national level wrestlers and if you want to make a name for yourself all you got to do is beat one of them. It seems that Winel needs to bump off Scott Penny (who cost him twice at state) or Jerome Ward or Jon Schoen.
We study and re-study these h.s. rankings many times over Maximus. Everyone is acountable for their performance on the mat in h.s. and not being at certain tounament can kill you in state or national rankings.
Take a moment and look at who is on the National teams and who is ranked high and who is not. Tell me what name is missing? Ethan Winel should be your answer.

Maximus, you of all people should be able to appreciate what summer freestyle / Greco does for ones ability (and in h.s. your rankings as well) and status with the rankers. I like Winel but I can't rank him over All Americans and year round wrestlers until he beat them on the mat.
Does Winel have a chance to increase his rankings.? Of course. He wrestles for Montini which means he will face at some point all of the studs like Brantley (dual, Dvorak), Schoen(dual), Fagiano (state), Ward (dual, Dvorak, state) and Penny (state). All one can ask for is an opportunity and Winel has one. He should do well this year and now that college is settled he can concentrate on winning late in the year.
Just wait. Your boy will be here next year and you will see clearer how the game is played.

"Loaded" isn't the word for it. Double-A in Illinois is insanely tough. Our two class system has a lot to do with that. ALL the weight classes are damn tough IMO... It's a dog fight week in and week out.
I've skimmed over the rankings and I think they look pretty good. I know it isn't easy.
Keep us informed with the college signings. I, for one, like to know where our Illinois guys are going:)

Illinois h.s wrestling is kinda like baseball. You can win the long 162 game season and not do squat in the playoffs because you are tired ala Minnesota Twins. Or you can win the post season after barely getting in like theSt Louis Cardinals. One thing I learned from my son's career is no matter how good you are it is an honor just to put your singlet on and make it to the sectional much less the state finals. This may be the toughest state tournament in the country. My son's All State certificate has a special place in our trophy room because it was hard earned. I bet a lot of other kids feel that way. The IKWF is just a warm up Maximus. Trust me on that.
Yeah I plan on talking with admin about starting the 2007 college signings page up. If he can leave last year's up and start a new one for the class of '07 it would be great. He has a lot to do to keep the site on point but I am sure he will get around to it.

It's already on my list of things to get done. I'll let you all know when it's ready.

Winel pinned Schoen last year in the Montini Marist dual. I believe Fagiano beat Winel in Freestyle this Summer.

He then lost to Winterhalter from Dakota, he needs to be more consistant to be top ranked.
