EAST PEORIA -- After a 75-minute closed session during a special meeting, the East Peoria Community High School District 309 Board of Education on Wednesday approved a settlement agreement with math teacher and wrestling coach John Sandoval.
The settlement, which accepts Sandoval's resignation, will not be final until an attorney who works for the Illinois Education Association approves it, board attorney Dennis Triggs said after the meeting.
Neither he nor school district officials would comment on what occurred. It could not be determined Wednesday why such a meeting was called, nor why Sandoval resigned.
Sandoval was with the high school for 18 years and last taught on Nov. 10, Triggs said.
His long tenure with the district was a factor in the settlement, Triggs said.
Sandoval coached many championship wrestlers at East Peoria High School.
He coached for a dozen years, stepped down in 2003, then last December resumed the role as head coach after another coach that he had mentored, Toni Bonati, resigned.
In 2000 Sandoval was named one of five East Peoria High School teachers who had inspired incoming freshmen and transfer students at Western Illinois University.
Also that year he received a $750 grant from the Ruby K. Worner Trust to measure water quality.
Sandoval could not be reached for comment. Co-presidents of the faculty union, Marty Green and Alex VanWinkle, also would not comment.
