Two of Illinois’ top wrestling teams locked horns Thursday, and Glenbard North quickly showed which one was better.
The Panthers won 46-11 against Neuqua Valley in Naperville, earning an 11-3 edge in matches won. Afterward, Panthers 130-pounder Geno Capezio offered one of the most overused but truest wrestling clichés you’ll ever hear toward explaining how the Panthers’ program consistently soars with the best in the state.
“Hard work,” Capezio said. “Just hard work in the room.”
The night started at 189 pounds, and Glenbard North reeled off eight wins at the outset in building a 35-0 lead, featuring pins by Chris Van Gundy at 215 and Dan Rios at 112 pounds. The Panthers also got major-decision wins from Eric Wahrman at 189 and Tony Ramos at 119 pounds.
The Wildcats never threatened.
“We got a few good performances, but we wanted to win seven matches,” said Neuqua Valley coach Mick Ruettiger. “It’s early, but as a team we didn’t show improvement tonight.”
The night’s big match might have been a state-title rematch between Ramos and state champion Chris Spangler, but Spangler and Adam Stine were absent due to illness, while the Panthers were missing Vince Ramos and Roy Feltson due to injuries.
The best match of the night came at 130 pounds where Capezio and the Wildcats’ Serge Urakhchin squared off at 130 pounds. Urakhchin led 3-1 after two periods, and Capezio escaped to start the third to make it 3-2.
That’s the way the match stood until a wild final 15 seconds, when Capezio went up 4-3 on a takedown, Urakhchin reversed him to go up 5-4 with seven seconds left, and Capezio escaped to force overtime as time expired.
Capezio won it with a takedown with 11 seconds left in the first overtime.
“It started off slow in the beginning, but then it got a little more intense,” Capezio said. “I thought he was tired, and I knew I could get a takedown late.”
Matt Walters got Neuqua Valley on the board with a 6-3 decision at 135 before Dan Monaco toughed out a 5-3 decision over Nick Proctor at 140 to give the Panthers a 38-3 lead.
Neuqua Valley got a pin at 145 from Jim Duffy and a 9-4 decision by Elliot Hudson over Chandler Hope at 152, before the Panthers’ Brian O’Connor won by technical fall at 160.
The night ended with the Panthers’ Josh House winning a hard-fought 6-4 decision.
“He’s been wrestling JV for us, but with (Feltson) out, he stepped up and did a nice job,” said Panthers coach Mark Hahn.
