With the discussion of Dergo starting at 184 for the Illini, it got me to thinking about kids from Illinois that are starting in college as true freshman. The ones that I can think of are

125- Brandon Precin (Northwestern) and doing very well. His record is somewhere around 17-4. He has also beaten 2 of the guys he lost to. He has some "big" wins over guys that are considered AA candidates. Such as Mark Moos, Pat Castillo, Luke Smith, Alex Usztics. He also lost to Moos and Usztics.

133- Jimmy Kennedy (Illinois) and doing very well. He only has one loss and it was in O.T. to Billy Murphy. His record is 12-1. Midlands will give an idea of how Jimmy will fare against the top guys. He did beat Aleksanyan (sp) from Nebraska 7-0 who was an NCAA qualifier last year and he beat the kid from Findlay (Uhl) who is ranked #2 is D2. Uhl has won a D2 title and a runner-up last year.

165- Steve Dwyer (Nebraska) and doing very well. I can't find an updated record on Dwyer, but he may still be undefeated. I can't find a match by match breakdown to see if he has any "big" wins to this point.

184- John Dergo (lllinois) who is undefeated in opens so far. Midlands will be a good measuring stick for him too.

197- Nate Everhart (Indiana) and doing well. His record is 13-5. I can't find a match by match breakdown to see if he has any "big" wins to this point. He will also be at Midlands getting to test himself.

285- Joe Trinka (Eastern Illinois) has a record of 8-6. He will also be at Midlands.

I am sure I am forgetting some, but I am impressed with how well these true freshman are doing to this point. Please add if you know of any true freshman (from Illinois) that are starting for their school. Also for clarification...when I say "big" wins, I mean wins over a top 15 guy or NCAA qualifier and such. I don't mean to minimize what these guys have done to this point at all. Again I am very impressed with how well these guys are doing.

I put D1 guys because that is really all I follow. If you have some true freshman to add please do.

I wonder how many other states can show as many true freshman starting and doing as well.

DUAL MEET

Dec 17, 2006 - WBF 2:28 - Sean Evans - Harper College - Record: 11-5

His matches against the big names like Askren are losses, but who would have expected he'd do this well? Unlike the others he never won state, or even went to the finals, and the next year he loses by a point to the (currently) top-ranked guy in the country. Roy and Bond are big names as well.

Another former Illinois high school wrestler will be pulled out of red-shirt. Kyle Hutter will be starting for Old Dominion at 125. I was sitting next to a friend when Hutter told him this at the Dvorak.

Steve Dwyer looks like he is doing great his freshman year. He was 14-1 before the national duals in Iowa, But had 4 tough matches against four ranked guys--#6, #4, #3, and #2 in the country. This week he will go up aginst Matt Pell ranked #7
