Ethan Winel tries like heck, but sometimes the Montini senior 215-pounder struggles to ratchet down the adrenaline.

“Sometimes I go into kind of a panic mode if I don’t pin the guy right away,” Winel said. “I freak out.”

“That’s the same way he plays football,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky. “He’s just raw emotion when he gets out there.”

Once he settled in on Wednesday, Winel earned a pair of pins against St. Rita and Providence Catholic in a quadrangular that also included Proviso East in Lombard.

The host Broncos swept the competition, beating St. Rita 49-18, topping Providence 42-15 and winning 62-13 over Proviso East.

“That’s a very good day,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky. “Any time you beat these schools, with the tradition and the tough kids that they have — we have a lot of respect for these teams.”

After beating Proviso East, the Broncos took on a St. Rita team that forfeited four weights and earned a 10-4 edge in matches won that featured pins from Winel and Mike Benefiel, and a 5-0 decision win at 130 by Andrew Saunders, who avenged a weekend loss to the Mustangs’ Mike Migawa.

“In our first match I wrestled him real wild, and I was reaching too much,” Saunders said. “This time I just took it one point at a time.”

Montini then earned a 10-4 edge in matches won over Providence and never trailed.

“I thought Danny Stelter had a great day at 145 and 152,” Bukovsky said. “He bumped up and wrestled Albert (White) tough, and he beat (Marty) Murphy.”

Stelter lost at 152 to White, St. Rita’s three-time state champion, before topping Providence’s Murphy via 7-1 decision at 145 pounds. Stelter earned a second-period takedown and back points to gain separation on Murphy before riding him out in the third period for the win.

“I was just trying to stay active and keep shooting,” Stelter said. “It just worked out that right when I hit my drag, I caught him on his back.”

Saunders ended the day’s action by taking on two-time defending state champ John Starzyk at 130 pounds. Starzyk won by 6-4 decision, but Saunders managed a pair of reversals and battled well.

“That was a great match for Andrew. We wanted him to wrestle tough for six minutes, and he did a real good job,” Bukovsky said.

The heart of Montini’s lineup may be Benefiel at 171, Dan Grimes at 189, Winel at 215 and Garrett Goebel at 285, but Bukovsky also got unbeaten performances on the day from Colton Rasche, Benny Marti, Carson Beebe, Jered Hensley and Isaiah Gonzalez.

“That’s what I want to see now, is everybody stepping up and all these different guys coming through for us,” Bukovsky said. “That’s when we know we’ve got a team.”
