Despite dropping a 42-24 match to Carl Sandburg in the final round of The Clash V, Montini Catholic won the team title by virtue of a head-to-head win over Apple Valley as both teams finished 2-1 in the championship pool. This is an update to the originally published report that Montini had beaten Sandburg, when in fact, it was the other way around. Montini's gamble to bump up its 103 and 112 pounders to the next weight classes didn't pay off, however it didn't matter as the Broncos won the team title as they and Apple Valley finished 2-1.
How close was it? Montini beat Apple Valley by a point, while Apple Valley beat Carl Sandburg by criteria.
Carl Sandburg and Jackson Memorial went 1-2, while Apple Valley and Montini went 2-1 in one of the closest final pools in the five-year history of The Clash.
It's the third year in a row that a team from Illinois has claimed the title.
Northwestern signee Mikey Benefiel along with upper weights Ethan Winel and Garrett Goebel powered the Broncos. Winel, a UT-Chattanooga signee, and Goebel, the Ironman champion all went unbeaten on the weekend.
