I'm sure someone would love to provide single A rankings. We'll need input from the A teams, fan, etc.

Is anyone going to attempt to do rankings for the single A guys?

I could make an attempt, but that wouldn’t be a wise idea on my part because I have never seen half of these teams and a lot of the results are missing; however, South has already broke down each of the regionals and I am sure your feedback would always be good.

Here's a crack at some rankings. I tried to do a Top Four per weight, but for some weights I'm a little sketchy. Feel free to chime in...

103- Miller, Eller, Borders (is he still wrestling?), ??
112- Brown, Davidson, Duckett, Anderson/Garza
119- Holliday, Garrett, Swanson, Helvey, Bly/Tyrone
125- Pyle, Franklin/Robinson/Rodriguez, Farlow/Hopwood
130- Aa. Phemister, Sanchez, Sargent, Stock/Kenny
135- Wilson, Au. Phemister, Cisco, Hosick/Patillo
140- Sherrick, Baker, Mattingly, Bittle/Hosick
145- Bowling, Kesler, ??, ??
152- Smith, Colp, Campbell, ??
160- Daly, Cerney, Hauter, ??
171- Shroyer, Scott, Marvel, Newman
189- Lane, Townsend, Payne, Zimmerman
215- Kleiss, Gulley, Kruse, ??
285- McLaughlin, Morgan, Stone, Willman

I have some gaps that need filling. Also, 119 and 130 seem to be deep weight classes, and 152 and 160 seem to have several (3) state-ranked wrestlers.

SouthFan1

103- look for Josh Eller-Vandalia
112 looks pretty close,add Foster-Vandalia & Tyrone-Murphy
119 Helvey pinned Bly @ Mt. Olive, but yes, deep class
125 look for a surprise, also Hopwood -hillsboro could be in the mix
130,135,140 looks good
145- not much on them but I'd go with Kessler winning it
152 Jo E Smith will be on top, and Id look for Campbell-Benton for 2nd
upper weights is where Im lacking on info.

Will he be at 112? I just figured him at 119. But someone we're forgetting at either112 or 119 is Dustinn Brown-Unity, I believe they are in our section this time. And he's back, probably at 112 by then.

I totally forgot about him, you're right. Don't know what weight he will be at, but he will be a title contender and favorite wherever he goes. If he's at 112, he and Davidson will be a nice match to watch. Although, Brown stuck him at state last year in the semis. Does anyone know if he's wrestled a match since coming back in January, and, if so, at what weight?

Holliday is a great wrestler, but if Brown does go 119...I don't think Holliday can beat him. It would be a great match, though. Garrett and Swanson would be a toss-up at that weight, I think. JMO

I know some of you in the south don't know much about Unity but I believe you have to count Dana Grubb (21-6)in the mix for 189. He won the Mahomet tourney which is a AA tourney with teams like Marist, Mahomet, edwardsville. He is a stud.

Zach Kleiss is at 171 now not 215. He has been losing weight all season and now he is down to 171. He also placed second at Mahomet at 215 while only weighing in at 180 lbs.

Dustinn Brown will be at 112. He is somthing like 6-1 now. He is looking better than last year so look for him to be in the finals.

I think Unity has some sleepers at several weights. They wrestle a pretty tough schedual so I think that if anybody is going to come out and suprise anybody it will be them.

Southdad

To lose the weight and drop down they can't use the 2 pound alowance until they get to the class they are going to at regional. then they can use it at that or the next weight up.

I haven't seen anyone talk about Johnson of West Frankfort? He has beaten Helvey twice. The only question I have is will he be 119 or 125 for regionals?

luvwrestling1
01-20-2007, 08:41 PM
well from what we were told today, his plans is to go 125, but same deal there, the kids arent pushovers. you would have Farlow, Rodriguez, Johnson and Helvey for sure at Herrin. Helvey is also bumping to 125. The other question is Garrett from Mt.Carmel, is he bumping as heard ? granite, he wouldnt see him till sectionals . hmmm add in Pyle, Hopwood, Franklin & Robinson 125 is shaping up pretty good. I just dont understand running from competition, to be the best you have to wrestle the best! Running to what you think is lesser competition doesnt prove anything, and just may back fire.

Anderson(Herrin) beat Garza 7-4 yesterday.

MTC140
01-21-2007, 08:43 AM
160 Stefko Hsb,Potts Law,Wolf Mtc

Potts is at 152, and Wolfe already beat Stefko.

Garrett has been wrestling 125 in duals and in confrence, but has been cutting to 119 for tournaments...He'll be down to weight come regionals.

luvwrestling1

Count another one in for 125...Brian Sanchez from Roxana has dropped...
so 119 might just be the place to go.

All this talk about lower weights, but some of the upper weights will be tough too. At 140, there will be four very deserving guys in Hossick, Sherrick, Baker, and Bittle with all the potential to place at state. 160, i think is the deepest weight with Daly, Cerney, Hauter, Pippins, Simpson( whose only lost twice), Stefko, McMahon, and Wolfe. Ritchie could also be in this group because he was ranked last year and kinda fell off during state series. If I'm not mistaken, all of these kids have one a tournament this year and in Single A for a sectional, thats pretty loaded.

Bowling from Van is at 140. Bowling made it to 140 before Jan. 1 Hope the rest that are droping have not used the 2 pound alowance. Or the new rule will get them.

This kind of jockeying at the end of the season is fairly common, especially after the 1st of January. The 125 weight class is always pretty deep, but this year it doesn't have the dominant wrestler or two like it has in the past. Maybe a SQ or two, esp. if Johnson goes, but not state placewinners as in years past. Sanchez and Johnson would both qualify if they go 125 and both be sectional title threats. Pyle is a title contender and would qualify as well. The problem is 119. It's very deep with multiple SQs and placewinners at the weight. Garrett is a multiple SQ, Holliday is a multiple SQ and placewinner, and Swanson is a multiple SQ. Anything can happen in the postseason, though, especially with injuries and illnesses...upsets happen for different reasons. If Johnson of WF goes to 125, which I believe would be his best bet to qualify, then my predictions change as follows:

125: Sanchez/Johnson/Pyle (toss-up, really) for 1-3 then Robinson/Helvey/Rodriguez as darkhorses

**Farlow and Hopwood are good wrestlers, but neither would qualify out at this weight with the above wrestlers at 125.

I would say with Sanchez at 125 he is the favorite there.. Most likely between him and Pyle. Franklin (rox) is now at 130. He switched with Sanchez and he is surely someone to keep an eye on. When Andy is on.. He is tough as Nails!! I know Scott at 171 will be someone to watch as well as Zimmerman at 189 he is new to the area this year and has done pretty good this year!! Payne at 119 could be a sleeper as well!

looking at the big picture for 125, none of the above mentioned really have a chance once they hit Champaign....Randal Peterson, Vinny Albers,
Cameron Vance,Tyler Hefler,Roger Ramsey...not with those kids in the mix.
Looking at the matches between common opponents between Pyle, Sanchez and Robinson...the 3 look pretty close. I wouldnt count anyone out, should be good. Does anyone know if Sanchez has used the 2lb allowance @130?

Daly beat Jared Staver Frome Lena Winslow at the Litchfield tourney. He was ranked #3 at 160. But Daly also turned it right back around and got killed by Hauter in the finals. I think if Daly can figure out a way to stop hauter from snaking in that long leg when he tries to run his tip it could be a whole new match. But this is the second year in a row Hauter has beaten Daly.

FYI: Hauter is the first single A wrestler Daly has lost to all season.

When Van wrestled them he was at 128. So he didn't use it there and he told me he was going to go on down from there. He didn't want to gain any to have to lose later.

I agree with the assesment. The Zimmerman kid is new to this area. However, from my understanding he comes from Wisconsin. He placed third in the regional last year as a sophomore, in the states toughest regional (majority of state placers/state champs come from this area) and sectiional. According, to WI wrestling rules only top two advance. Look out for this kid in the next few weeks.

top placers are 119 will most likely be holliday, garrett, and johnson. swanson moved to south dakota so he wont be there so refigure top 4-5 at 119.

Jake Holliday-Eddie Garrett match will be one of the closer matches that Holliday has had all year...everybody he has wrestled hasn't been able to compete with him..i think that will definatly the match to watch at 119...112 Brown will own everybody no question.

Im pretty sure that the Holiday-Garrett match has already happened once this year at Murdale. Garrett is good, but Holiday is having one awesome year, undefeated and has given up 1 takedown all year long:) . But I do beleive it will be Holiday-Garrett-Johnson @119. Brown will definately own 112. Also Campbell and Colp will be a match at 152, if it goes to the mat, Id say Campbell will take it. McKinstry and Gully @215 will be one to watch too. I think Kessler will take 145, but watch out for Devon Johnson, he may be a freshman, but he was still a mutlitime state champ in IKWF, he could make some noise! 103 is gonna be all Jake Miller, Im betting he will place top 3 at state. 130 will go to Aaron Phemister, 135 to Wilson, probably without much contest. 125 is going to be up in the air, especially with Sanchez and Pyle meeting in the semis. Good Luck to all the southern guys!
