St. Rita's wrestling team was in dominating midseason form, sweeping No. 8 Oak Park 40-16, Barrington 57-18 and host Libertyville 49-13 on Saturday.
St. Rita started the meet by moving Jerome Ward, ranked No. 1 at 189 pounds, up two weight classes to face Oak Park heavyweight Peter Kowalczuk. Ward responded with a 7-3 decision and St. Rita (18-2) won the next four weights to build an 18-4 lead. Oak Park's Dan Martin (145) had a double overtime 8-3 decision, and Peter Lovas (152) won 16-10 to pull the Bengals to 22-16. But St. Rita won the next four matches with decisions by Albert White (160), Taylor Osborn (171), Mike Nolen (189) and Alex Brandt (215).
''We were excited about wrestling Oak Park,'' St. Rita coach Dan Carroll said. ''We may see them later at the sectional championship.''
Libertyville (10-4) edged Barrington 31-30. Leading 25-24, Alex Petrareli's fall at 4:33 secured the 189-pound win for the Wildcats.
Oak Park (12-1) squeezed past Barrington 38-24, getting a fall from Brad Bolen (130) and major decisions by Jack Dengel (135), Weldon Rogers (140) and Peter Lovas (152).
AT LEYDEN: Conant placed in 11 of the 14 weight classes and had three champions to win the 12-team invitational with 206 points while Leyden gave chase with 196.5.
Adam Wright (125), Isaiah Frazier (189) and Kyle Weck (215) took first for the Cougars. Frazier (168) got behind Ridgewood's Sebastian Marzec with 35 seconds left for a 14-12 win.
At 160, Plainfield North's Cedric Gibson reversed Conant's Ken Aleksiak in the second overtime for a 9-7 decision.
Leyden's Adam Schammert (135) posted a 12-6 decision over Richards' Rob Frias.
Sean Newsome (285) and Paul Kioltyka (119) took first for Richards.
Highland Park had three champions, including Joe Schwartz (103), Danny Fisher (112) and Billy Lichtenstein (140).
New Trier's Sam Campbell (130), Stevenson's Bobby Vagun (145), Ridgewood's Stefan Kosanovic (152) and Vernon Hills' Ryan Michel (171) all took home championships.
