Jake Herbert goes undefeated in five matches

The eighth-ranked 'Cats fell to Central Michigan 22-11 to finish eighth at the prestigious tournament. Northwestern wrestled five matches without top-ranked 141-pounder Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward) who missed the event due to injury. Top-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allgheny) went a dominant 5-0 in his return to the mat was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.

Second-ranked 197-pounder Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) went 4-1, with his only loss coming to top-ranked Max Askren of Missouri.

Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sanburg) started things off for the 'Cats with a 9-0 major decision over Central Michigan's Matt Steintrager. Precin registered multiple takedowns and earned the riding time advantage to give the 'Cats a quick 4-0 lead.

Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco), wrestling at 133 lbs., lost a close 1-0 decision to Conor Beebe.

CMU begin to pull away starting at 141 lbs. Eric Kruger scored a 4-0 decision over James Kohlberg (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows), wrestling in the place of the injured Lang to put Central Michigan in the lead 6-4.

Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) surrendered a major decision at 149 lbs. and Vince Colletti (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) lost an 11-5 decision to give CMU the 13-4 advantage.

Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) and Nick Hayes (Councill Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) fought close matches at 165 and 174, respectively, but could not help the 'Cats close the gap to the Chippewas.

The eighth-ranked 'Cats, who have been nearly untouchable from 184 lbs. and up, went into the final three matches trailing 19-4. Another major decision by Herbert over Ben Kelto gave the Wildcats four points. The junior, seeing his first action since Nov. 20, went a perfect 5-0 in the duals with a pin, three major decisions and a technical fall. The top-ranked 184-pounder remains undefeated.

For the third time this season, the second-ranked Tamillow defeated 10th-ranked Wynn Michalak, this time by a 9-3 decision to cut the 'Cats deficit to 19-11. Michalak started the year ranked above Tamillow, but the junior's performance against the familiar foe has helped him rise in the rankings. Tamillow's only loss in the duals was to Missouri's No. 1 Max Askren.

At heavyweight, third-ranked Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) fell to No. 5 Bubba Gritter of Central Michigan. The Chippewa's takedown in the first overtime period proved to the be the difference. The loss was Fox's first in a dual match this season.

The 'Cats start their Big Ten slate at 7 p.m. Friday at Illinois. The Wildcats will host Iowa at Rolling Meadows High School Sunday at 2 p.m. to round out of the first weekend of conference action.

Jake Herbert goes a perfect 4-0 with two pins Saturday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Wrestling without top-ranked injured Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward), the eighth-ranked Wildcats fell to Iowa at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, 22-18. Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) went 4-0 Saturday with two pins, a major decision and a technical fall. Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) went 3-1 in his four matches. The 'Cats face Central Michigan in consolation bracket for seventh place.

Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) started the 'Cats off on the right foot, recording a fall over Charlie Falck at 125 lbs. Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) had a rematch against Iowa's Mario Galanakis. The redshirt freshman defeated the Hawkeye at the Midlands, but fell by 3-2 decision Saturday.

Iowa's Alex Tsirtsis pinned James Kohlberg (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows), wrestling in the place of the injured lang to put Iowa ahead 9-6.

Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) dropped a 10-6 decision to Alex Grunder and Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) fell by major decision to Ryan Morningstar. After Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) and Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) lost their matches at 165 and 174, respectively, the 'Cats trailed 16-6.

Herbert continued his impressive return with a pin of Phillip Keddy. The junior had nearly three minutes of riding time and recorded multiple near-falls before pinning the Hawkeye at 3:44.

The second-ranked Tamillow defeated Daniel Erekson 8-2, but the standard decision was not enough to bring the 'Cats back. Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) topped Matt Fields 3-2, but the eighth-ranked Wildcats came up three points short, 22-18.

Wildcats face Iowa in next round of consolation

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- No. 8 Northwestern stayed alive in the consolation bracket of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals with a 25-15 win over the Cornell Big Red. Freshman Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) started things off with a technical fall the duo of top-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and second-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) finished things off with back-to-back major decisions. The 'Cats face a quick turnaround and now go against Iowa.

Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) started things off right for the 'Cats with a 20-4 technical fall over Luis Salinas. The freshman scored four near-falls and three takedowns. Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) won by forfit over Adam Frey to give the Wildcats an early 11-0 lead.

The Big Red got on the board with three points when Manson Hicks scored a 11-6 decision over James Kohlberg (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows), wrestling at 141 lbs. in place of the injured Lang.

Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) dropped a 5-1 decision to Cornell's fourth-ranked Jordan Leen and Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) fell 11-5 to Drake Hovis. NU maintained an 11-9 advantage heading into the second half of matches.

At 165 lbs., Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) registered a 7-0 decision over John Basting to extend NU's lead to 14-9. Hagel scored two takedowns, a reversal and earned a riding time advantage.

Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) took a 7-5 decision at 174 lbs. Hayes scored a late takedown of Joseph Hooker and had the riding time advantage to capture the close victory.

Herbert continued his dominance, improving his record on the day to 3-0 with a 15-5 major decision over Luke Hogie. The junior has notched two major decisions and one tech fall in his three Saturday matches. He scored his points on four takedowns, two near-falls and and a reversal.

Second-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick), coming off a close loss to Missouri's No. 1 Max Askren, cruised past Cornell's Carl Landers with a 13-1 major decision. Tamillow scored four points in the first period on a takedown and a two-point near-fall. He scored an early escape in the second and followed it up with multiple takedowns. The 'Cats forfeited the heavyweight match with the dual clinched.

Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) notched a technical fall for five of the 'Cats points. Northwestern returns to the mat later today at 5 p.m.

After defeated West Virginia, 'Cats returned for a showdown against the Missouri Tigers, the top team in the nation, but the Tigers dominated the middle weights and the eighth-ranked 'Cats could not catch up, falling 33-8.

Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill.) had a strong showing at 125 lbs., but was edged in an 8-7 decision by John Olanowski. Missouri pulled out to a 6-0 lead when Tyler McCormick took an 8-3 decision over Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) at 133.

The Tigers pulled way starting at 141 lbs. James Kohlberg (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows), in for the injured lang, dropped a 12-2 major decision to Austin Primus and Vincent Colletti (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) fell by major decision to Joshua Wagner. After Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) got pinned by Michael Chandler, the Tigers had a 20-0 lead halfway through the dual.

Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) was pinned by Matthew Pell and Hayes fell by major decision to Missouri's top-ranked Ben Askren before Herbert put the 'Cats on the board. The junior dominated Joey Garrity and took a technical fall with the score 20-5.

Second-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) stayed with Missouri's top-ranked Max Askren, but took his first lost of the season with a 9-4 decision. Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) remained undefeated in dual matches by topping Tyler Perry, 5-0.

The Wildcats will face the winner of Cornell and Oklahoma in the consolation bracket later today at 5 p.m.

Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) notched a major decision in his first match since Nov. 20. The 'Cats return to the mat later today at 1 p.m.

The top-ranked Herbert defeated West Virginia's Chance Litton 12-0 at 184 lbs. in his first action since the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 20.

At 125, freshman Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sanburg) won a 4-0 decision over Scott Stuart 4-0 to give the 'Cats an early 3-0 lead. Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) pinned Mark Anderson at 2:03 to make the lead 6-0.

After James Kohlberg (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows), wrestling in place of the injured Lang at 141 lbs., and Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) at 149 lbs., surrendered major decisions, the 'Cats held on to a 9-8 lead. The Mountaineers pulled ahead 14-9 when Zac Fryling pinned Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant).

Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) took a 2-0 decision and Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) won by forfeit to give the 'Cats a 18-14 lead heading into the last three matches.

Herbert's major decision pushed the lead to 22-14 and Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) both won close decisions to give the eighth-ranked 'Cats the 28-14 victory.
