Every year Crystal Lake Central wrestling coach Marc Tadelman saw his teams knock off one of the Fox Valley Conference powers in a dual meet.
The Tigers had beaten Cary-Grove, McHenry and Woodstock in previous seasons. This season, Central landed the biggest one of all, six-time defending FVC champion Dundee-Crown.
Now, Central has a shot to go undefeated in the FVC when it hosts Johnsburg on Thursday, something the Tigers never have done.
“We’re a good team, but we didn’t know we’d be this good,” Central sophomore 171-pounder Trevor Parlberg said. “We thought we weren’t going to do quite as well because we had only one senior.”
Jim Sdregas, the Tigers’ 285-pounder, is the only senior in the lineup. Three freshmen, three sophomores and five juniors comprise the rest of Central’s lineup.
“We can win all our duals, but [the Fox Valley Conference Tournament] will be tough,” said Tadelman, in his 11th year as Central’s coach. “We don’t have a true full lineup, but we still have a chance if we wrestle our best. Dundee-Crown, Woodstock and us have chances.”
In the FVC, duals don’t count toward the team title. The FVC Tournament will take place Jan. 26-27 at the Central Fieldhouse.
Tadelman can take gratification from what the Tigers have done since he took over. They were 10-10 his first season, then came the split that produced most of Prairie Ridge’s enrollment. Wrestling was one of Central’s programs that struggled after the split, winning one dual meet in each of the two years after Prairie Ridge opened. The Tigers won a combined five duals in the two years after that.
Then, Central started an upswing. In the past five years, the Tigers have finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth twice in the FVC Tournament.
“There were years when we struggled to get kids into the [wrestling] room,” Tadelman said. “We were getting blown out by everybody. Every year we had some matches where we won some, then we lost some. There were times I had to juggle the lineup to get five or six wins. Now, we have 12 solid guys.”
Tadelman recently hit 100 victories for his career, another testament to how far the Tigers have come.
