Cadet cream rises to the top

Illinois needed a strong morning round...and some help from Pennsylvania...to come out on top in the Cadet Nationals in freestyle.

And, wouldn't you know it - both happened.

If you remember, Pennsylvania led Illinois in wrestlers remaining, 16-15, and in unbeatens, 7-6, entering this morning's session.

But Illinois responded by putting five wrestlers in the finals, more than any other state. Jabari Moody (84), Miguel Silva (91), Colin Holler (140), Ricky Robertson (171) and Jordan Ellingwood (189) are all wrestling for titles this afternoon.

As a result, though both Illinois and Pennsylvania have 14 All-Americans, Illinois already has clinched at least a share of its second Wells Fargo team title this week.

Illinois holds a 64-50 lead over Pennsylvania going into the final round. With each team having the same number of All-Americans, the magic number is 1 - one Illinois win or one Pennsylvania loss.

Holler, Robertson and Ellingwood all reached the finals despite a loss. Holler lost to Nikko Villarreal of California in three periods in the seventh round before coming back to beat Jack Clark of New Jersey. When Clark turned around and beat Villarreal in the third period of their match this morning, that put Holler in the finals.

Robertson is in despite being up a weight from his Greco-Roman finals appearance at 160. Ellingwood became the latest Illinois wrestler to make something out of nothing. After losing in the first round to Matt McClimens of Missouri in three periods, Ellingwood got to the finals by winning six in a row.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania completely collapsed in the morning round, going a combined 8-16. The Keystoners have just two in the finals, and three going for third place, compared to Illinois' five and four for the same placings.
