The Rumor Mill: Penn State and Andrew Long
Rumors are floating around da intirvebz that 2010 125 pounds NCAA finalist Andrew Long, formerly of the ISU Cyclones, has been given his release and may be heading east to Happy Valley to rejoin his former coach, Cael Sanderson, as early as next month. If the rumors are true, is it possible that PSU can win a national title this season?

Interesting. I imagine if this were true, he'd probably go 133, shoring up one of the few holes in Penn State's lineups and leaving Martellotti and Pataky to duke it out for 125. This would certainly shift PSU from the category of "potential contender" to "likely contendor" for the title.
However, internet rumors are unreliable at best. I'll believe it when I see it. |

Even if true, would he not be subject to NCAA transfer rules and have to sit out a year?

According to what I am hearing, ISU has granted him a release.

I looked at the NCAA transfer rule; sitting out a year only applies to Division I football, basketball, football and hockey. I guess in all the other sports you can play right away provided some other criteria are met.

Think Cyler Sanderson, Duke Burke, Steve Mocco, et al.

If this is true, then I'm surprised. Cael has built somewhat of a reputation as a coach who champions integrity and character in his athletes. Given Long's past, I'm surprised Cael would want anything to do with him (see Bubba Jenkins). However, Cael did recruit him at ISU didn't he? Maybe he's willing to give him another shot...

I do not know if it is true. I have not asked anyone up in Ames about the situation quite yet. If Andrew is in fact going to PSU without having to sit out at all, then that surely brings them into the national title picture. From what I was told, if he got some things straightened out in his life, 2nd semester at ISU was not out of the picture for him to compete as a cyclone. Now, who knows if he was getting things straightened out, thats between him and the coaches. I do not know why he would want to leave for any reason other than not being able to compete second semester. He had great success under KJ, making it to the national finals. Andrew's life has been interesting over the past 1.5 years or so, but he handled things well during season last year and has been training at ISU still through the club. Will be interesting to see how it ends up, as Cael did recruit him to ISU. Hopefully he stays at ISU and sees things through, but that is between him/his family/and the coaches.

I have been told by one of my buddies (who is on the team) that this is in fact, what Long is looking at but it isn't set in stone. This is a bad news/ good news situation for ISU and likewise with Penn State. Andrew was finding it nearly impossible to work his way back into KJ's good graces, both through KJ's stubbornness and Long's own flaws. What Long did to finally get kicked off of the team was inexcusable and would not be something KJ would let go very easily, but supposedly since ISU is a regional training site he could still train here and try to work his way back on to the team. He did start to turn it around this semester but he was still no choir boy, not by a long shot. Some of the things he was doing last year were way worse than what he got in trouble for, and he cleaned them up. I still bumped into him more times than I should have considering he was supposed to be focused on training and not the extra curricular stuff.
Also, I have been told that a release was not necessary as he was no longer on scholarship, so he had free reign to do what he wanted. That was not from the same person. |
