No More Rankings!!
I am sick and tired of reading about who people think are ranked at what weight. Let me tell you one little piece of information, RANKINGS DON'T MATTER!!! IT'S HOW YOU WRESTLE!! I saw that this weekend at IHSA sectionals when I saw a state champ get taken into double overtime by a kid who didn't even qualify for state last year!! It doesn't matter who is ranked what and who looks good, it matters who goes out on the mat and gets it done, period! Watching Iowa State and Iowa last weekend, an NCAA runner up got beaten by a kid who didn't even place in the NCAA tournament. He went out on the mat and got it done. Do you think before his match he was talking with his teammates and was worried about what the other wrestler was ranked? I doubt it. Rankings are fun to write about, but don't mean squat, so don't put too much thought into whether or not people think you are good. Go out, work hard, and prove it. Then we'll see who's good March 11th.

And in your IOWA scenerio.. Yes, I bet the unranked guy did discuss Or atleast think about how good his apponent was or where he was ranked. Do I think that rankings actually mean that theat is where a person will stand on th epodium? Nope.. They are just for fun, and to create conversation. Chill a little and let the kids have soem fun. |

Rankings can be fun, but I know some of the kids dwell on them way too much. I have told some of them that it is better to be unknown and create surprises, than to be known and knocked down.

Well said, a number can mean so much to a person, especially a junior high school kid. Some kids get freaked out by what a guy looks like, just imagine how bad it would be if the guy was huge and the kid knew he was ranked 1st. Some say its a disadvantage but maybe it would be a blessing to wrestle blind and deaf? No Distractions. (That comment is not meant to be offensive to anyone in anyway. Those who do compete in our sport with handicaps are very talented individuals and they have my respect.) |
