I still don't understand why.........

Fila wouldn't have the two 3rd place finishers wrestle each other, are the only sport in the olympics that gives out 4 medals? It just doesn't make any sense to me, what's one more match?

It's baffling. The World Championships operate the same in other years. Two thirds, two fifth places each. Ugh, FILA.

It seems so simple, follow the guy to the finals, wrestleback, then have the athletes from opposite sides wrestle for 3rd.

Wrong. Several sports besides wrestling give out two bronze medals. If you don't like it, blame it on the pool system.

Yahoo article on the subject link below, including the author's thoughts on why they do it this way. The article states that wrestling, judo, tae kwon do all give 2 bronze medals.

You are correct sir! Judo, Tae Kwon Do, and wrestling all issue double bronzes. The reason is because it would be hard to fit it into 1 day if there was 1 more match per weight. There was just an article on yahoo.com this morning or yesterday that Edmonds posted that explains it.

I actually meant to ask if wrestling was the only sport, but you answered it.

Time is not an excuse that I can buy...

Let's think about this... How many high school and collegiate tournies are out there with 20 man brackets, that have full wrestle backs, are wrestled in a day. Yeah, most of them. And you are talking about 10 to 14 weight classes. Even with only 3 mats, there should be plenty of time have a true double elimination tourney so we can make sure the best 3 guys in the world come home with the hardware. Especially when you're wrestling only 3 weight classes per day.

Yes, but wrestling tournies are usually the only event at a particular school on a particular day. The olympics has 1000+ events to squeeze into a 17 day period. I am not a scheduler for the olympics, but I think it is safe to assume that time and venue are two major factors that prohibit the extra matches. If every sport added "a few" matches or games the Olympics would be a month long!

that article is stupid.

it doesn't have anything to do with brackets. the author says they are 'drawn that way'. what does that even mean? if you add one more line connecting the two bronze medalists, the bracket would look like every other bracket we see.

and it doesn't have anything to do with time. only a couple weights are wrestled each day. today, for instance, if they wrestled a true 3rd place bout, it would have amounted to a whopping 3 matches. you're talking a max of 18 minutes mat time. (less if they only go 2 periods)

the real reason they don't wrestle for true 3rd/5th is because...

Fila wants as many countries to be recognized as successful as possible.

achievement boosts recognition and encouragement which, theoretically, validates programs and builds numbers.
