Max Schneider and Greco-Roman

Has Max wrestled much or any Graco-Roman wrestling? If I'm not mistaken, his Judo season is in the summer. Just wondering. I would think his Judo would help him in Greco if he were interested.

Judo and Greco a very different. Max's best shot at the Olympics is in Judo. Either that or completely dedicate himself there starting now with hopes toward 2020. Parre tier is what's beating us at the highest levels and Judo work and high school wrestling don't translate to parre tier.

I do not recall saying they were the same. Maybe I did. If I did, I was wrong! I believe I said that I thought his Judo would help him in Greco, at least on the feet.

Judo uses a lot of foot sweeps, trips, and leg reaps.

Bingo. Max would be MUCH better suited for freestyle if he ever decided to try it.

I guess I need to clarify what I meant originally. I meant that the balance and body-awareness would help him. He seems to have a great sense of where he is at all times and how to get get to where he needs to be to score.

It's funny. Max is having a clinic on how to apply his Judo into wrestling. When I suggest that he would be good in Greco based in his past success in Judo, people get all pissy and say it isn't the same and it would not apply at all.

Stupid opinion!

No pleasing some people, I guess!

Vern, we're saying because Max's Judo game doesn't necessarily translate into Greco. You can't sweep or trip in Greco. Why he has great balance, his talents would suit him better in freestyle. The neutral position is Greco and Judo are much different.

Max's best takedown, which I believe is a modified kata garuma, would be useless in Greco, where as it's much similar to Lebedev's Russian fireman's carry.

The US Greco coach approached Max while in the OPRF room, after the 2008/2009 state tournament. Coach ask/suggested Max consider joining the team.
I think Vern sees the same.
Freestyle/Folkstyle/Judo, each require personal attention but all share the desire to "place your foe on his/her back" Judo is not all foot work (ashi waza) and his judo has the ability to adapt. It's all a matter of time and injury managment. (fingers crossed)
Right now building his skills in/at one of the most beautiful enviorments on earth, with coaches that care about him, and the same club that Marti Malloy (SJSU) trains with is ready to welcome him. The camp is going great, he is not holding back any of his techniques. One step at a time . IMO

Either way, I know we all wish Max well at whatever he does, but especially in wrestling at the next level.
