IHSA travel policy
Administrative Procedures, Guidelines and Policies These administrative procedures, guidelines and policies are for use during the 2006-07 IHSA school term only. They shall be superseded by a subsequent publication of the policies and are not applicable to any year subsequent to the 2006-07 IHSA school term. In the case of any conflict, whether actual or believed, with the constitution or by-laws of the IHSA, the constitution and by-laws shall control. Any understanding, misunderstanding, opinion or belief by any individual as a result of reading these policies shall not be binding on the IHSA. Official rulings shall be requested in writing only by the principal or designated official representative of a member school and shall be provided in writing by the Executive Director. Only a formal ruling from the Executive Director is binding on the IHSA. 10. Travel Policy Schools may travel any distance provided the participating students miss no more than one school day, including travel to and from the competition. When was this enacted and how is this going to change the way that Illinois teams compete in the future with tournaments like Beast of the East, Powerade and many other top-tier tournaments now being open to our guys?

It was enacted during the season last year effective this season I believe. Neuqua is taking advantage and going to the St. Eds duals in Ohio in Mid December.

Sure, but that is well within the old 500 mile travel range by nearly 150 miles. And, how does the IHSA determine the mileage? Do they take out a compass and trace a circle on the map or is it actual driving mileage they determine it by? If that's the case, Neuqua Valley is 501 miles from the Powerade, according to Google maps.

After they made cheerleading a sport, they did receive a lot of pressure from schools who used to compete in nationals that are held in Dallas and Florida. I know that had a little to do with it.

The old rule was measured from the border of Illinois. 300 miles I believe. The St Eds distance is not a factor. MC wrestled them two years ago while under the old rule.

But I believe some time ago didn't a school get penalized for exceeding the 500 mile rule? I thought that it was MC that got hit for that violation. This rule change maybe better, schools can travel further over the winter break since school is out during that time.

But fortunateley, this is all moot now that this restriction has been lifted so as not to affect a girls sport (cheerleading).
Every male athelete should fully support cheerleading & Poms. If & when title IX starts going after the High Schools, the numbers of participants in those sports could save our asses on the proportionality issue. That is, if the IHSA decides to continue considering cheerleading & poms as sports when they're under preassure to cut boys sports on the one hand, and they realize that recognizing cheerleading & poms as sports will make it more difficult to cut some boys events on the other. |
