Illinois-Florida showdown in Junior Greco

With a very successful current round, it appears that Illinois just might have enough to hold off Florida, which still could put as many as seven in the finals of the Junior Greco.

Zane Richards (125), Dillon Cowan and Luke Smith (145), Trace Engelkes and Dylan Reel (160) and Jahwon Akui (171) all won to stay unbeaten this morning, while Brandon Rice (135) won his sixth in a row, Jared Parvinmehr (112) got an all-important bye after a win and Sam Brooks (189) and Josh Marchok (215) stayed alive with wins.

The only casualties of the morning so far have been the two heavyweights, Jeremy Brazil and Reid Sealby, who both lost their first matches of the session.

So 15 are still wrestling...with a possibility of 16 All-Americans. Florida, with 10, is the only other remaining state in double figures.

Brooks lost 1-0, 2-0 in the fifth round to the guy he just can't beat, Apple Valley (Minn.) state champion Jake Waste, but just won in three periods, 7-0, 2-3, 2-0, over Shane Hughes of Wisconsin. The two wrestled each other in the finals of the Oak Park-River Forest Tournament in late January, with Brooks winning a 11-6 decision.

Brandon's Big Three, Rossi Bruno (125), Kevin Norstrem (130) and Clark Glass (152), haven't been touched in the competition. The three have allowed a grand total of two points to be scored against them thus far. Isaiah Varona (112) and Earl Hall (119) are other Floridians likely to be in. Lee Wildes (215) and Doug Vollaro (285) could get in with some luck.
