Illinois Wrestling Loses a Tough One

Sadly, Jack Stoudt, the former Pekin High School coaching legend passed away today. Long before Washington appeared on the scene in Central Illinois, the Pekin Chinks, who later became the Dragons, dominated wrestling in the area as few other teams even dream of. From 1967 to 1989, under the head coaching of Jack Stoudt, Pekin won 12 district titles, 6 more Regional titles and 5 Sectional titles. There were numerous state placers, a couple of state champs and a few other finalists as well. I simply am not up to detailing everything as it is just too hard for me at this time.

Coach Stoudt assisted another Pekin legend, Jim Custer, prior to taking over the reigns. He was a longtime successful figure in Illinois high school wrestling and is one of the pioneers in bringing the sport to where it is today.

My life was shaped and molded by three men. He was one of those three. I will be forever grateful for the lessons, skills and leadership he taught me. He gave me drive, determination, toughness and a respect for the sport and those around it. His passing leaves me feeling more than a little empty inside and I am sure that I am not alone. My sympathy goes out to his wife, Elaine, and his daughter Mary, who were the loves of his life.

Bye Coach. Thanks for all the times you fixed my headgear.
