Clash XVI update

Morning session went about as expected. OPRF won two easily then got hammered by St Edward, Washington advanced to the bracket finals and got handled by Apple Valley.

In the evening session, GBN gave Anoka a battle that came down to the last two matches, and Anoka gave Park Hill a tough dual as well, Park Hill advancing to the Championship bracket. Simley advanced to the bracket final to face Montini. The Broncos were on fire this evening, scoring 152 points, downing Prior Lake 80-0, and Simley 72-6.

Championship bracket will be Montini, St Edward...far and away the two best teams here...Park Hill and Apple Valley.

Second bracket will be OPRF, Anoka, Washington, and Simley.

I will do a match-up breakdown for Montin v St Edward tomorrow.

Providence lost a close 1st round dual, won the next, will be wrestling in the morning session. Marmion Academy was losing their opening dual, but I didn't see the final result.

I watched both St Edward and Montini wrestle at the Ironman and The Clash. Here is my take (+ means bonus points):

106: Mon
113: Mon +
120: Mon
126: St Eds +
132: Mon
138: St Eds
145: Toss-up
152: Mon
160: Mon
170: Toss-up
182: Toss-up
195: St Eds +
220: St Eds +
285: Toss-up

I favor Montini in the dual, and they have the potential for bonus points at 120 and 132 but both St Eds wrestlers at those weights have the ability to keep it close. Should be a good one.

Wouldn't be surprised if Christensen wrestles at 220. Won't that match start at 195? It would make make sense to not give up bonus points the first two weights.

It wouldn't surprise me either. O'Malley is pretty tough though and he's a head-hunter.

Montini completely dominant so far. They have wrestled 3 duals, lost one contested match, gave up one forfeit to Gable Stevenson and have more falls than a CPA can add up. I expect Park Hill and St.Ed’s to be more competitive. Nevertheless, the overall field seems down quite a bit, especially with Buchanan dropping out.

Is the Montini / St. Eds score on track a misprint?

47-9 is accurate. Montini lost only one wrestled contest.

That was the most dominant performance by any team ever at the clash. OPRF should be ranked in the top 25-30 after going 5-1 beating two teams ranked in the top 35 handily. No doubt they are 2nd best in Illinois.

It was a great night for Illinois wrestling. GBN won their bracket, OPRF won the 2nd bracket, effectively finishing 5th overall, and Montini put on a fireworks display.

When you look at what could have been a competitive dual on paper and then you see a 47-9 score you wonder what happened. In a nutshell, Montini won all the matches they were favored in, all the swing matches, AND scored an upset at 126lbs.

I was calling the OPRF v Washington dual (which OPRF won 43-18), but constantly looking over at the Montini v St Edward dual. Starting weight was 220lbs which played perfectly into the Bronco strategy. They bumped Christiansen and he got the win over O'Malley, followed by McNichols winning with a pin at 285lbs, and it turned into a snowball effect where the teammates were feeding off the emotion. At 126lbs Burnowski charged out on that mat and fought like the 3rd monkey trying to get on to Noah's Ark when the first raindrops came down and upset nationally ranked Hepner. Before you knew it the score was 23-0. Woods followed a dec over Kasmir, and St Edward was able to finally get on the board when Andonian won a dec over Mayora, but Jake Stiles turned around with a HUGE OT SV at 145lbs over Sam Dover and St Edward didn't win another match until a FF at 195lbs...and you could see the frustration on Dakota Howard's face when he walked out to get his arm raised. Wow.
