IRTC Adds Two Athletes

The IRTC is quickly becoming a very attractive option for post graduates because of the coaching, facilities and outstanding training opportunities such as the recent extended training in Russia.
Coach Medlin offers another dimension to the total ILLINI wrestling experience.

The Illinois Regional Training Center, located in Champaign, Illinois, on the campus of the University of Illinois, has announced the addition of Jesse Delgado and Nick Carr as new member athletes.

Delgado, a native of Salina, California, was a two-time NCAA champion and three-time All-American for Illinois. He kicked off his full-time senior-level career last year by earning a bronze medal at the Cerro Pelado International and finishing with All-America honors at the U.S. Open.

"At the highest level every wrestler looks for whatever competitive edge they can use, and after trying out a different training location, I quickly realized that home is where I need to be," Delgado said. "I strongly feel I can be successful in Champaign because of the extreme level of comfort I have here both in and out of the wrestling room. The community, the fans, and the alumni truly make Champaign a special place to me."

Carr, a South Fayette, Pennsylvania native, competed collegiately for both Kent State and Washington and Jefferson College. He was a two-time NCAA Division II finalist, earning the title of champion in 2015.

"I made the decision to train at the IRTC because the program can help me develop and compete at the highest level of wrestling. The wrestling culture at the University of Illinois is like nothing I've ever seen before. The community is very supportive and the coaches and athletes are great people," Carr said.

The Illinois RTC is spearheaded by its head coach Bryan Medlin, who has extensive coaching experience and proven success in the international styles. Medlin, who was brought on the Illinois staff last year as Director of Operations, is pleased with the addition of both men to the Illinois RTC.

"When I first started this job we set down and went through the senior-level athletes that we were going to target for the regional training center in the immediate future. The RTC board and the contributing members put Jesse at the top of that list. We are really excited about his future and excited to have him back in Illinois," Medlin said of Delgado.

"Nick came to us with the idea of joining the RTC after taking a little bit of time off of the sport," Medlin said of Carr. "We had already seen the work ethic of his brother Michael, Illinois' starting 141-pounder, and we were extremely excited when we got to see him workout and found out that Nick had a similar work ethic and approach to the sport of wrestling.
