My name is Bob Hougas and I live in Ottawa, Il. I graduated from Marseilles High in 1970 and played football & wrestled. I go to as many wrestling meets as I can, including almost every State meet since the mid to late 80's. Some of my favorite tournements are the Reaper Classic, the PIT and the NCIC conference tournement. At State I can be found in the A section among the Sterling Newman fans as my oldest sister's kids went to school there and the people that my sister and I go with are from there.

My name is Gavin Kurtz. I am a 2007 graduate from Ottawa Township High School. I wrestled for 11 years, starting with the LCWC, then going to the IESA and wrestling for the New Lenox(Liberty) Vikings. I was originally from New Lenox, IL, then moved to Marseilles, IL. In 2002 and 2003 we were the team state champs and I placed 6th in 2003. In 04 i placed 5th at Fresh/Soph state and did 1 better then next year at Fresh/ Soph State. I qualified in 2005/2006 for the AA state tourney and went 0-1. I think my varsity record was something like 96-13 in 2.5 years at 189. I'm currently at Jamestown College in ND, but not wrestling. I'm transferring at semester but i am not sure if i want to wrestle anymore.

Brett Anderson here.
I'm 31 (how did that happen), husband, father of twins (14 months) and a wrestling official. I keep telling "the boy", the sooner you walk the sooner you can wrestle. ![]() The wresling bug caught me back in 90 as a freshman at Carmel (Mundelein) and I had a completely uneventful 4 year 'career'. I'd been talking about getting back on the mat in some compacity since then and finally did last year. It was short lived, however, as I blew out a knee my first meet. That small matter couldn't keep me away and this year I'm back for more. |

I love officiating wrestling -- there's nothing quite like it. There are ups and downs, good nights and bad, good calls and blown calls. Nothing hurts worse than knowing you blew a call. It's just like wrestling. You never think about the 10 matches you won... just the one you lost. The hundreds of good calls I made TODAY have already been forgotten and two I made over 10 hours ago are still on my mind. Such is life, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Watching one kid grow up on the mat is fantastic... watching a bunch of them every week is heavenly.

My name is Mario Pajaj, and I am 16 yrs old, wrestling for Maine South High School. Started wrestling my freshmen year, and now I am a sophomore. I started off really bad, being the 3rd string freshmen at 130, but after doing the offseason, and meeting so many people from all over the state, I have learned a lot about the sport, and am starting on Junior Varsity this year, with a 16-0, 12 pins, record as of Dec. 16. I’ve become very involved in wrestling, ending the offseason with 83 offseason matches, and winning a match at Freestyle State, though it may not seem like much, but to me it was a great improvement. I hope to see all of my friends again in the offseason, and hope that I will improve this season, and possibly make varsity.
I moved to the USA when I was 8, and have lived here 8 years (you all could have probably done the math), I got involved with the sport from Coach Fallico going around our school during passing periods telling kids to wrestle. So far I love this sport: the practices, the meets, the long hours on those cold Saturdays spent wrestling at SOB o’clock in the morning. But I guess it is all worth it. Well, that’s my story, havent lived long enough to tell you all more (not that anyone cares).

Hey.
I'm Dan Hoelting. I wrestle Varsity 160 (and occasionally 152) for South Elgin High school. I'm 17 years old and though I'm a junior, last year was my first year in wrestling. It was pretty eye-opening. I started off awful and ended the year as a halfway-decent JV wrestler, finishing with an above .500 record on the JV level (I spent a lot of the season on varsity getting pounded, so I guess that helped). In this, my second year of wrestling, I am 11-12 (7-12 without forfeits) on varsity. I learned a lot over the offseason (4 tournaments and a trip to the NIU team camp, along with our school's camp), and I'm pretty sure that's the only reason I have any wins on varsity this year. I hope to finish the season on a positive note, and come back next year much improved (and a lot stronger). |
