A few other Teams

I just looked at a few schedules to see how many tournaments a few of the top teams would be attending. This is what I found (OK State was a little suprising).

Iowa - 4 Opens
Minnesota - 4 Opens
Illinois - 4 Opens
OK State - 2 Opens

I know the NCAA does have some type of total competition limit like the IHSA has but am not sure what it is as it has never effected me or my wrestler. Not sure if it includes opens as a date. Would not seem like it would since it does not count against a semester yet I do know that my son had to clear the Clearinghouse before he could compete in any opens. Kinda wierd. I guess each team does what they need to do to stay sharp.

From what I understand, at least this is how it is in the NCWA, there is no real match limit, however there is a weigh in limit. you can only weigh in and wrestle in ur school's singlet so many times. This is probably why the beginning of the year a lot of the best wrestlers at the opens, at least the d1 starters, are wrestling unattatched. Again, this is just how I think it is, I'm not 100 percent sure.

I think you are on point with this. That is also why you see a lot of early season quads at the DI level. 1 weigh-in for 2-3 duals.

Mario is involved with the bracketing just prior to the tournament so I assume he has a good handle on this.

Most teams wrestle in about 5-7 open tournaments a year so by theory a sophmore national champ like Tyrone Ware would by rule be in the Elite division anyway. Or his coach could just ask and he would be moved up.

As far as Kennedy or Dergo are concerned they do not compete in the Kaufman-Brand...last year they went to California I believe.

Albert is competing in the Amature division...both divisions are tough as hell...I have been the last two years and neither one is a walk in the park...I saw a lot of good wrestlers go down early in both divisions...

Here is a copy of the posted rules from the UNO website....

2007 UNO KAUFMAN-BRAND OPEN DIVISION PARAMETERS
We have designed the parameters so that the two different divisions keep the same individuals as

the previous years merely to keep the numbers similar for organizational purposes.
Elite Division:

Has
EITHER previously engaged in a minimum of 2 years of intercollegiate competition
OR

has participated in a minimum of 5 open events since November 1, 2006 (see below
for definitions).
Amateur Division:
Has

NEITHER previously engaged in a minimum of 2 years of intercollegiate competition
NOR

participated in a minimum of 5 open events since November 1, 2006.
NCAA Bylaw 13.11.3.1 "Open" Events
Competition shall be considered "open" if the competitive event itself is not classified by age
group or level of educational institution represented, and the selection of participants is not
limited except by number, by geographical area or on the basis of some objective standard of
performance.
NCAA Bylaw 14.02.6 Intercollegiate Competition
Intercollegiate competition occurs when a student-athlete in either a two-year or a four-year
collegiate institution: (Revised: 1/10/95)
(a) Represents the institution in any contest against outside competition, regardless of how the
competition is classified (e.g., scrimmage, exhibition or joint practice session with another
institution's team) or whether the student is enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies;
(Revised: 1/10/91)
(b) Competes in the uniform of the institution or, during the academic year, uses any apparel
(excluding apparel no longer used by the institution) received from the institution that includes
institutional identification; or (Revised: 1/16/93, 1/11/94, 1/9/06)
(c) Competes and receives expenses (e.g., transportation, meals, room or entry fees) from the
institution for the competition.

Twist, thanks for the clarification.

I know Kennedy and Dergo don't go to the KBO. I was just using them as examples of wrestlers that were very competitive as true freshman and that if kids like them were not allowed to wrestle in the Elite division it woudl be silly.
