This isn't true. The Big Ten has traditionally had a rule that prohibits redshirts from competing in tournaments where team scores are kept (thus barring any Big Ten schools from wrestling their redshirts at the Midlands). There is no rule barring freshman from competing in the tournament.

Ok I wrote that wrong....REDSHIRTs can now compete in the Midlands if they are from a Big 10 school. Last year Kennedy and Dergo could both wrestle because they werent redshirting.

Exactly. They just changed the rule this year too, which was a good idea.

So, yes Benefiel and other red-shirts will be wrestling at Midlands.

FYI

I just found out that Duke was not listed on NIU's team roster probably because NIU didn't know if he was going to wrestle or not. Duke messed up his knee pretty bad in the third period against Hayes but has been cleared to wrestle at Midlands.

sorry, i meant RS froshespreviously werent allowed. and im glad that they are finally allowed to compete in the midlands. its just such an outdated rule... the coaches are allowed to pick the extra guys (a limited number per team) so its not like the coaches would send out guys who would get manhandled and go 2 and out. you can bet your top dollar that u of i will be sending out tirapelle (if he's ok) and prater at 41 to rack up all the points and placers they can, and other teams will do the same.
