HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING
Wilmington claims Comet Classic title with five wins
BRAIDWOOD -- The Wilmington wrestling team won eight of its last 10 matches at the Comet Classic to take first place at the 17-team meet Saturday.
Manteno finished fourth, host Reed-Custer was sixth, Dwight was eighth and Peotone finished 10th. Central and Herscher placed 12th and 17th, respectively.
The Wildcats' Alex Jones (103 pounds), John VanDuyne (125), Steve Heino (130), Jake Murphy (145) and Tom Fritz (171) each captured individual titles with a 3-0 performance. Garth Cartwright finished second at 112 going 2-1.
"This was a good team win," said Wilmington coach Rob Murphy. "We were missing three starters today and all of them were seniors; that left us with only one senior. The team really pulled it together for the win with so many underclassmen wrestling."
Jon Santoro led Manteno's effort with a first-place finish at 135 while Josh Hoerler (119) and Jim Porter (160) each took third.
Reed-Custer's Bryan Lenig (119) and TJ Griffin (152) won their respective weight classes and Jon Eichelberger was second at 103.
Chris Stewart took top honors at 189 and Austin Holland was second at 130 for Dwight. Central's Brandon Beegle (135) and Peotone's Tom Shereck (171) finished fourth while Herscher's Ethan Brown earned the top finish for the Tigers with sixth-place at 285.
Oak Forest Quadrangular
OAK FOREST -- Senior Tavarus Green is still unbeaten, and the Bradley-Bourbonnais wrestling team set the school record for dual victories in a season with wins over Oak Forest, Shepard and T.F. South.
Green improved to 30-0 with two wins at 160 pounds, and the Boilermakers improved to 19-5, breaking the old record of 18 victories set in 1977.
Other winners for Bradley included Bricen Hakeman (130), who won three decisions, and Dan Page (171), Colton Beaupre (189) and Jake Siroius (Hwt), who each finished the day with two pins.
Mahomet-Seymour Invitational
MAHOMET -- Bishop McNamara captured fifth place in the 15-team Mahomet-Seymour Invitational behind three first-place finishes from Jon Young (140), Mario Zinanni (215) and Mike Letton (285).
Jameel High (160) took second place, Ray Buell (189) was fifth and Nikko Juarez (119) finishes sixth.
