Your right and i dont disagree... this is what i distinguish on both ends of the weight spectrum...

If the goal is to include more participants and grow the sport, we are best served supporting the little guys and the big guys...

Little guys need help but not if they cut in a signficangt way ... 112/119 is a primer for college wrestling at 125... need to drive that behavior as juniors and seniors because its good for the sport and the kid... never met a fat kid who was 125 lbs and wrestled competitvely

On the other side, the big boy has potential health challenges too of the opposite nature... a 14 or 15 year who is over 300 lbs and wants to wrestle (i know several who i support) needs help too... if they never see a match until they get to 285 they typically loose interest and quit. I would even consider making the weight unrestrictive (fresh/soph) to help the big kid get a taste and a love for the sport so he is double vested into loosing the weight and challenging himself in the best individual sport he could participate in... but i want to drive behavior in highschool that supports college wrestling because one begets the other and that's what will help sell and grow the sport!

i have seen so many kids come into this sport as freshman and weigh anywhere between 300-360 the 285 pound weight class is incentive for these kids to lose weight and get in better shape in order to compete. We should not honor being that big by adding more weight classes because plain and simple high school kids should not be that big. I was actually against the ten pound increase to 285 and this is coming from a lifelong hwt wrestler.

It was so rattled that they did not even enter a heavyweight into Conant! I thought I would just throw that out there for people to sit on because whether people like to admit or not that is a big deal but I am happy that OPRF got their Chirstmas gift because that is what i is a gift because head to head I think the Celtics would be victorious by at least 10 points
To be fair, OPRF didn't have a 103lbr either. I think a dual meet OPRF vs Providence would be a tough match up because of the strengths of the two teams. It could go either way. Likewise vs Neuqua, West Aurora, Minooka, and who knows what GBN might look like at the end of the year. I wouldn't be too quick to write off Sandburg either.

Not sure if it would make much of a difference if OPRF sent out a 103 pounder or not.

While i can see the validity of your points, i feel that there should be a 250 weight class and then a 300/305/something above it. there are many talented football players who shy away from wrestling, because they know they will have to drop weight. just my opinion.

wrestling is known to be a sport where athletes of all sizes can compete, and i think that capping it off at 285 may be unfair to the select few who can weigh in it 300 and still be athletic.

The heavyweight for my high school was 320 as a sophomore, and he was a very quick and powerful wrestler. I do recall many behemoth pushing matches for high school heavyweights though. Today's 285 matches are overall much better.

with all this talk about the heavy heavyweights. what about the guys that weigh 230-260 who give up 20-50 pounds already. i am sure they do not want to have to deal with somebody weighing well over 300. plus a match with someone that big is bound to be just a push and shove match with 2 people that can't be moved. i think 285 is plenty big enough for a high school athlete

It wouldn't vs Klimara...but it would as far as scoring points in a tournament; you mentioned that Providence didn't have a 285lbs at Conant. It won't matter who Providence sends out vs Ellis Coleman either.
