State Champions

Here's a question for you all. I would say most state champs have less than 5 losses so which state champion has had the most losses for a season? Anybody know. Also how many guys with a losing record have placed at state. I remember a kid from Rockford Lutheran that had like 15 losses wrestling for the state championship but got teched or pinned I believe.

Some times the losses can be wrong a few years ago a kid from Crystal Lake Central had like 19 losses but 17 were forfitts that happen after he had already won the matches. The state took them away because he moved and did not sit out enough days before wrestling. That stuff may happen more then we have know. This year Boggess had a loss that did not show up for weeks after he wrestled that match. State went back and added it later.

Jack nickels form Savanna still hold the record for most losses by a state champ. He came alive at the state tourny and decided he wasn't going to loose again. Jack wrestled JV for Savanna until his senior year, then he was varsity for the first time and won a title. Great guy and one of my old coaches.

He had a losing record going into Regionals that year. I have been intorduced to him before and WCCI did a special on him before the second session of the state tourny. Good story there. All about peaking at the right time.
