Don't worry lantern we know where the info comes from. I really don't understand why if you really don't care about Illinois wrestling (beside the Dwyers) why your here. If all I talked about was Green Bay football I wouldn't join a Chicago forum. All you talk about is Ohio, Penn, New Jersey, East Coast whatever. Then you offer up these off the wall statements about who dropped the ball and what this guy and that guy should do. I wonder why if you have all this information, why aren't you in a front office as an AD or head coach or any kind of power position to put your hearsay into action. I'm willing to bet you weren't around in the 70's to know how tough New York wrestling was nor did you ever wrestle in New York to make a personal statement about how tough it was.

Jim and Jeff Jordan didnt go to Ohio State because Russ Hellickson recruited them to Wisconsin!!! Hellickson was the head coach at Wisconsin when they wrestled in college. |

someone on themat keeps saying wrestling was 10x tougher in the 70's than now which I dont believe. I do root for Illinois wrestlers but I also root for people who wrestle the way I like I am not a homer

I gotta agree some what with GL here. I am not thrilled about the move with Heff, good coach, word has it the kids like him, but i just think they needed to go in a slightly different direction....But i guess time will tell.

Nobody is claiming IL as the top folkstyle state, but it's a good one.
This lineup makes a few assumptions, but not unreasonable ones, and even if undone, it would be a very good team. If Illinois got only the top IL talent, that would make it one of the best in the country. Of course that would be stupid. Here is a possible lineup from last year. The White and Benefiel possibilities would assume the Illini landed them and kept them eligible, but 6 of these guys are current or past All-Americans (though Kennedy was at 133, but could prolly be moved to 141). Three of the other four (Blanton, White, and Benefiel) will likely be AA's, maybe even contenders, Fagiano might as well. 125 Precin 3rd 133 Dennis 7th 141 Kennedy 5th (at 133) or Prater R12 149 (White if he were eligible) otherwise? Terrazas? 157 Poeta 2nd 165 Dwyer 174 Dergo R12 (or maybe Benefiel if eligible) 184 Blanton 197 Fagiano 285 Wise 7th Last edited by grapplingfan; 04-30-2009 at 04:53 AM. |

Forgot to mention: NCAA champion Iowa won 2009 NCAA's with 2 (or 3) in-state qualifiers/1 in-state AA.
Falck dnp (went to hs in MN -- Apple Valley) Morningstar 3rd Borschel dnp Out of state: Dennis 7th Metcalf 2nd Keddy 4th Erekson 4th So much for in-state No two qualifiers came from the same high school (only two even came from the same state, or three if you count Falck) So much for pipelines Zero wrestlers on the entire roster come from PA, OH, NJ, NY or anywhere else east of MI. Those are all great wrestling states, but obviously you don't have to recruit there to win a national title. so much for our friend's pet theories As for coaches, 5 of six were Hawk wrestlers via IA, MN, MT, one went to Oklahoma from Florida.
