Still, Blanton's first crown was 3 weights up from there. That was new territory. Reel is on his heels at 145. I've said it before, but the most impressive string might have been Garrett Goebel's 3,5,1,1 at 215 and 275/285. That is astounding. It will be interesting to see what Gage Harrah does after his 3rd place finish at 215 this year as a frosh. Didn't mean to forget him, the Williams brothers popped into my head as I was typing. |

I think its mostly a numbers game. Immediate success in HS is much more attainable for the littler guys in that if a kid comes into HS at the first 2 or 3 weights, as they are wrestling against mostly other underclassmen. I agree that if a kid enters their freshman year in the middle to upper weights, it is much more difficult to experience immediate success (within the first couple of years). However, there are many many examples of kids who weigh 130+ lbs. as 8th graders who eventually experience very high levels of HS success (by their JR or SR years). I don't think that you have to be a 3 or 4 time HS champ to be able to consider yourself as having achieved very good HS success --- although I agree it is a hugely impressive accomplishment (and an exception to the rule) when you do have a mid-to-upper weight freshman show immediate success in high school. I do also believe that with the 3rd class being added, you will see more mid-to-upper weight freshmen & sophs having earlier successes.

Interesting fact... looking at the freshman who placed during 1990-1994 (my era on the mat)....
1990: Joe Williams - Won state 1991: Mark Bybee placed 2nd at 103; Ben Gerdes placed 3rd at 112 1992: Ryan Root placed 5th at 152. Note Joe Williams won the weight 1993: Cisco Bermudez 3rd at 103. T.J Williams state champ 1994: Darnell Lolis 2nd at 103. All these wrestlers had great success in IKWF which was the factor to their success as Freshman. Interesting to see what Nick Georgean does next season
I think he could have won IKWF this past season at any weight from 130 to 156. Any one no what school he will be looking to be a 4xmer at next year?

I saw this kid wrestle about six times at the Iowa National Duals for Team Illinois. He is really something special and has a great combination of physical skills, aggressiveness and technique. Sometimes, though, he wrestles a little out of control and it gets him into trouble. I agree that he would have had success across weight classes, but I don't think he would beat Ellingwood. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching him. His style is great for the sport!

How about Mammen? I haven't seen him wrestle as much but I think that would be a tough match for Georgian to win as well. Probably 3 future state high school champs. Georgian, Mammen, Ellingwood

I agree, multiple championships for each if they aren't knocking each other off
