Augusburg wins over UNO 18-12 in Battle of top DII vs DIII Top Ranked Teams
Morgan wins, Mavericks fall for first time since '08
Mario Morgan (26-3) defeated two time DIII finalist Jafari Vanier 9-2 1/22/2010 9:59:33 PM MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - In the battle of the top-ranked wrestling teams in NCAA Division II and III, it was the Augsburg Auggies (9-0) who came away with the dual victory over Nebraska-Omaha (5-1) in Friday nights showdown in Minneapolis, 18-12. The loss snaps the Mavericks’ 18-straight dual match winning streak, which was the longest since 1969-1971 when UNO won 19 duals in a row. It’s the first time UNO has lost a dual since Feb. 21, 2008 when Northern Iowa defeated the Mavericks, 22-15. The Auggies won six of 10 matches on the night and scored the most points (18) that UNO has surrendered all season. The dual started at 125 pounds with second-ranked Terrell McKinney getting stunned 5-4 by unranked Josh Roberts in a hard-fought match to put the Auggies up, 3-0. In the 133-pound match, Cody Garcia got a little more than he expected from sixth-ranked Paul Bjorkstrand. After two periods, the score was locked up 6-6, but Garcia took the lead late in the third period with a reversal. Riding time gave Garcia the 10-6 win and evened the score at 3-3. Garcia is now 34-0 on the year overall and is 6-0 in dual matches. Mario Morgan (Mt. Carmel) gave the Mavericks their first and only lead of the dual after taking care of Jafari Vanier, 9-2, in the 141-pound match. The Chicago native picked up his 16 straight win using one near fall, two takedowns, one escape and a riding time bonus point to improve to 26-3. Vanier is a two-time DIII finalist and ranked fifth in DIII. The Auggies tied the dual back up at 6-6 when Lucas Murray picked up the win over Tait Weatherbee at 149, 3-1. Augsburg kept the pressure on in the next three matches at 157, 165 and 174. At 157, fifth-ranked Jason Adams defeated second-ranked George #Ivanov#, 6-3, to give the 6-3 lead. Sixth-ranked Orlando Ponce gave the Auggies their biggest lead of the dual at 12-6 when he beat fourth-ranked Ryan Pankoke 5-3 in the 165-pound match. Orlando Ponce won the Auggies’ third-straight match at 174. He defeated Brett Rosedale to give Augsburg a 15-6 advantage. Austin Boehm closed the gap to 15-9 with a 13-6 win over Brad Baus at 184. Boehm’s victory set up a must-win for top-ranked Jacob Marrs in the 197-pound battle against Jared Massey, the top-ranked wrestler in Division III. Massey controlled the match and picked up the win, 6-2, and insured the Auggies the win with the score at 18-9. At 285, top-ranked Elijah Madison defeated No. 7 Andy Witzel, 2-0. The Mavericks will be back on the mat tomorrow when they face eight-ranked St. Cloud State at 2 p.m. Match-By-Match Results No. 1 (D-III) Augsburg (Minn., 9-0) 18, No. 1 (D-II) Nebraska-Omaha (5-1) 12 125 -- Josh Roberts (AUG, 12-6) dec. What happened at 125? I was shocked. Clayton majored Roberts in what I didn't consider one of his best wrestled matches.
Dang ice. i was all set to watch, too.

Big upset at 125 for UNO. Unranked kid knocks off #2 in the country. McKinney had been real hot. He will get back on track tomorrow. Team was very flat tonight.
