Regional Scoring
If you read the wrestling terms and conditions on the IHSA Web site http://www.ihsa.org/activity/wr/2009-10/t-and-cs.pdf
The following note is in Section V.B.1 Note: In all Individual Regional tournaments, an eight-person bracket will try to be used. When the number of competitors is not a power of two (2, 4, 8, etc.) for any specific weight class, there shall be byes in the initial round of competition. The number of byes shall be equal to the differences between the number of competitors and the next higher power of two. There shall be no byes, after the first round of competition in either the championship or consolation brackets. If this is accurate this represents a change in how regional weights with more than 8 people are scored. Last year "pigtail" matches were wrestled and only those competitors scored team points. By this note, the IHSA has returned to the NFS standard power of 2 rule, which means these brackets are scored like a 16 man bracket. For example in a 9 team regional weight class where there are 9 entries, two wrestlers will wrestle in the "preliminary round" and 7 wrestlers will receive byes and therefore will be eligible for advancement points and double bonus points if they win their next match. I'm assuming that this was communicated by the IHSA to the host schools, but for any scoring geeks keeping track of scores in the stands, this is a departure from the last several years. Can anyone confirm this? |

So how is a bracket scored that has, say 5 participants in a nine team regional?

Yes... the IHSA has returned to standard Federation scoring. Brackets with 9 or more wrestlers score as a 16-team bracket.
