Coach Farina made you believe you could win every match no matter who you were wrestling. He provided me with confidence beyond my belief. I went from a first year back up wrestler as a freshman to a state qualifier my senior year.

For me it was a way of getting out of cleaning the house on the weekends. If I wasn't wrestling than I was doing whatever my parents wanted me to do.

What I thought was getting me out of scrubbing toilets and washing floors actually made me realize the love I have for a sport I was able to compete in for a short period of time.

Notice an interesting trend?

So far, no one has mentioned any form or recognition. Nothing about Medals, trophies, bracketboards, rankings, name in paper . . . . . . This doesn't surprise me. It speaks volumes.

Now that I have a son in wrestling, it has reminded me of how much I loved and still love the sport. I also wrestled for Farina from '82-'85, and he was as tough as nails and knew how to get in our heads. As Eagle88 said, he convinced us we could beat anyone. While I was not a regular varsity starter, I wrestled and beat a few state qualifiers in the off seasons. My biggest take-aways is that no matter what happens in life, we have the ability to get back up and go again. I was waiting to go into a job interview recently and found myself pacing... just like we would before we hit the mat before a match. The friends I made in wrestling are still most of my best friends today, and anytime I meet someone who has wrestled, there is a bond. This is the greatest sport in the world. Dedication, dicipline and passion.

I would say it was watching my older brothers wrestle and wanting to be like them. Also like the 1-on-1 aspect of the sport.

Let's here your stories.
It's not very flattering to say so, but I just wanted to be tough. I liked being able to prove that I was tougher than somebody else and wrestling provided a way to do that. I think a lot of kids are like that. It's natural. I didn't want to fight people and I didn't dislike people...I just wanted to be macho before I knew what macho was. Once I started wrestling my HS coach, Jack Stoudt, inspired me. He wasn't a big guy but he truly was tough! I was part of a great wrestling tradition at that school and was more proud of that fact each year. I like the fact that for the most part, in wrestling you are only limited by your commitment to follow your dreams. In wrestling some people can literally be as good as they want to be regardless of their height, weight, quickness, balance or flexibility. You can focus on your strengths and body type and be successful without having the "whole package".

I grew up on a farm in WI and attended high school in the early 70s. My siblings and I had morning and evening barn duties. We were allowed to skip evening chores if we participated in a sport. I and each of my eight brothers and sisters became at least 3-sport athletes (regardless of ability.) Wrestling is a very tough sport, but it was a blast compared to shoveling cows**t or milking.
