Fisher Tournament

Thank you for a well run tournament. There was plenty of good competition, food and good wrestling. This the third year in a row for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. On the down side, sorry to say that the young official with the diamond earrings should not be officiating. He was bad last year and worse this year. The kids really deserve better.

Thank you for the continued participation at the Fisher Jamboree! I agree, the tournament went VERY smoothly (those of us that helped out were greatful) & the wrestling was good at all levels. Sorry to hear that 1 official left you "with a bad taste." Looking forward to Super Bowl Sunday at your place!

I was at the match when the problem happened. The ref stepped out to ask the state official who was also at the meet how to handle the problem instead of making the wrong decision. The right decision was made and the match went on.
All you coaches need to back off the refs. It is not just a cake walk every match you walk into. Being a ref is more than just coming to the meet and holding up your hands red or green. The are rule changes each year, along with new rules and new situations. Not just that but how to keep you wrestlers safe out there on the mat. Take a second to appreciate how much time and dedication these refs have to put in to make your experience worth while.
Personally i would rather have that "kid with the diamond earrings" at any meet that i will ever put on. He works great with kids helps them when they make a mistake. And shows them what they are doing wrong.
I just hate when you guys take these gentelman for granit. There are some that need work but at least show some respect to the ones that show they love the sport and do great things for your kids.
I have been around this sport for 45 years and watched that boy grow up and i wish i was half the young man that he has become at the age of 21.

I am the first to say we have great officials in the Ikwf. The offficial in question is one of only 2 or 3 that I have seen that I will not write a check to.When i host my tournament Dan Fulcher assigns my refs.I have added that young mans name to 1 other that I do not want.I had a very long talk with a veteran official today as to the problem. There seems to be a group of young refs who just dont get it and are not improving.I dont think it is easy job but they are compensated well.I just hope that we get enough officials that supply and demand keeps the best ones working most often.

I think you need to relook at compensation, true, they make about $100, $150 for a days work, but reffing wrestling is physically the most trying sport. I make $150 reffing 3-4 girls softball games or 3 peewee football games and I am home by lunch time. The average wrestling ref, at a kids tournament, has to handle about 100 matches, with about 100 coaches who think they know more than he does, thats 100 up downs (minimum) lots of crawling and scooting on knees and still watching for a move that could injure a wrestler for life (unlike any other sport.) Wrestling refs do it becasue they love the sport, I don't know very many that do it for the money, there are ton more sports that pay better and are easier

I am happy he has someone like you sticking up for him. He seems like a great guy and I would probably enjoy, drinking a beer, wetting a line or telling tall tales with him. I just don't care to have him officiate. This is the only time I've talked about a ref on these boards and I went out of my way not to learn or use his name. His heart is in the right place but his skills are not. He did ask for help but that help would be equated to "How many downs do you get?" in football or "What line do you shoot free throws from?"in basketball. Last year was just as bad and I gave it a pass. This year there was no improvement and so I said something.

On a side note....as coaches we are saddled with certain expectations from parents and wrestlers alike to "protect their interests". When refs make bad mistakes sitting back and saying "Oh well, that's the way it goes!" just doesn't cut it. I never got in his face or yelled at him. I was courteous then and I am trying to be now.

I don't think it matters whether they make $100 or $300 for 7 hours work. Those who are committed to doing a good job will. There are those who get down and get dirty and those who call back points and pins from their feet. All I ask is that they know the rules and hustle. Judgement calls are just that and each ref is usually consistant in their judgement, so it is incumbent on the coach to know who is reffing and what their tendancies are. I saw a ref at LP this weekend who I thought did an outstanding job. Never saw him before but I told him I appreciated his work on the way out that afternoon. Thanks to all who give us their best efforts.
